"quick" questions about the Arimaa challenge

Hello forum, I am (probably) going to enter the 2013 bot challenge (forgive me for not using the correct name ). I have a few questions first: 1. Do I need to buy my own computer? (I mean, I own a computer, but can't afford one as far as 1000 - or really any money lol - dollars is concerned). Will one be provided/be available at/during the competition? 2. Is there a place this competition is held? I mean, is it held in one central location to which everyone sends in their programs? Or does everyone go on their own competition hardware at home/work/whereever? I am kind of confused about this (probably my own fault ). Thanks!

You will need to use your own computer to program the bot. The computer won't be provided for you. That would be undoable as the "Arimaa Challenge" basically is a one-man show with help from volunteers. With regard to running the bot during the competition, assuming the rules will not change: you'll need to make sure that it runs under Linux, and submit it to Omar. All bots will be run on the same server to make sure that there are no hardware differences between the bots when competing in the challenge.

So just so I understand . . . I am going to send a program in to Omar to run on his own linux cpu. I am not going to be running the bot on my own computer for the competition. True/false? Yes/no? Edit: wow, I just read over my first post; rrreeeaaaalllly noobish!

Correct. Omar will give you an account on the competition linux server. You can upload and configure it there, and that is where it will be run from.

Do note: to make the bot play other bots or humans in the game room (when you are testing it), you *will* need to run it on your own computer. If you use Windows, you can develop it and run it in a Linux virtual machine. Or, you can develop a bot that can be compiled and run on both systems. For the competition, it must be able to run under Linux; as far as I know, there is no Windows server.

Ok . . . thanks! That answers my question. I will definitely run it on a Linux virtual machine during my tests. Thank you both very much!

Good luck developing the bot. That's not an easy task.
