It was indeed most likely trying to reduce your elephant's mobility and its lack of extensions and quiescence mean it doesn't realize it is simply sending pieces to their deaths en masse.

Note that P1 doesn't always mean the same thing. Gnobot2005 has no static goal detection, no static capture detection, and no search extension. Thus it is P1 in a much stricter sense than Bomb2005P1 is P1. Gnobot2005P1 literally can't see that you are able to capture its pieces next turn; it relies wholly on static evaluation at the end of its moves.
