Stellar

Stellar is a new digital currency, kind of like bitcoin, but has some features which are better. Actually it's more than just a digital currency, but you can read about it to learn that. Stellar was just released yesterday so it's very new. To get it going they are giving away free Stellar coins to people who sign up. I know a lot of the history behind this project and highly recommend everyone to join this. Be sure to tell others about it.

1. Create an account on http://stellar.org
https://launch.stellar.org/#/register

2. Use your facebook account to complete the sign up. They don't post to your wall, They are just using facebook to limit people from creating multiple accounts to collect more coins.

3. Verify your email using the code that they will email you. Don't delete the email and save it because you might need it to recover your account if you forget the password.

If you use a password manager like LastPass.com, don't forget to save your login info there.

Now for some background on the Stellar project. This project is a non-profit org setup by Jed McCalab. Jed was the creator of the peer to peer e-Donkey file sharing program back in 2000. More recently he was the creator of the Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange which was the first bitcoin exchange. But he sold the exchange and the guy who bought it then crashed it. After selling Mt. Gox Jed moved on to creating Ripple.com which was setup as a private company to create a digital coin and asset transfer system with better features than Bitcoin. The system would have transaction times of a few seconds compared to 10 minutes for bitcoin; did not burn electricity to produce coins, etc. The company received funding from Google Ventures and other VCs. The Ripple project was not well received by the community because 50% of the coins were kept by the company and 50% were distributed in a give away. Also the code was not made open source from the beginning so people did not trust the system. The technology developed at Ripple was really good though. I think Jed was not happy with how Ripple was going so he left it and created Stellar. Now only 5% of the coins are being held by the non-profit org and 95% will be distributed to get the currency going. Stellar is basically a fork of the Ripple technology but done in a non-profit way which is more fair and will appeal to the community. I think this project has a lot of potential to change how payments work on the Internet.

Has anyone tried to donate to ("tip") arimaa.com using stellar? I have tried to figure out how to use the site. Apparently you have to find a "gateway" that you trust to get it to work (I think it is a kind intermediary between me(the payer) and the payee that uses stellar.org to transfer the money somehow).
I have tried googling stellar gateways and all I get is sites about chakras and healing   Huh I cant figure out how to make it work.

I would like to contribute to the site in some way other than playing/posting. Does anyone know of another way to donate?

I think the best way to support Arimaa financially right now would be to contribute to prize funds of events.

Hi Omar,
thank you very much for the recommendation - I joined in 2014 after your post and I just checked last week and was very pleasantly surprised how it turned out.

(I am only sorry for myself that I didn´t buy bitcoins back in 2011 when you mentioned them Smiley

If you would know about any other shooting star tokens/coins etc. I would pretty much appreciate any info.

Thank you very much once again.
