A good place to get some insight is the wikibook here http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Arimaa. The rest comes from playing and analyzing games.

In addition to the wikibook there is also a book titled "Beginning Arimaa" by two time Arimaa world champion Karl (Fritz) Juhnke.
You know I haven't updated the front page in a while; thanks for the reminder
