Flash player issue

Ever since I downloaded the latest Flash player (9,0,28,0), I've had problems that weren't an issue before. About a minute after the game window loads, if it does at all, the text becomes thick. The window is then also prone to freezing, especially if it loses the focus. Sometimes the whole computer gets bogged. Using a resource meter program, I've discovered that my system and user resources are almost completely consumed during a game of Arimaa now. I'm using a Windows 98 with a Pentium II (old, I know, but still within the Flash player specs).
Before this upgrade everything has always worked very well. How can I fix this problem? I can't enjoy games anymore because there is a high risk that I'll crash during them.
