Hi, fairly new player here. So, playing bot bomb2005p1, I got to a position where it was the bot's move, but no move was forthcoming. I waited six minutes, and the bot's time ran out, and then continued counting after its reserve was used up without ending the game. So I looked back in the gameroom and found that the game was considered finished, and when I looked it up it claimed that I had lost on time and that the bot had made a move. I still have a window open which shows the last move as being my move as silver, and a total time taken for the bot that now runs at 15 minutes and some seconds. This is frustrating, to say the least.

Other data: Firefox 2.0.0.6 on Linux (Ubuntu-feisty) and the latest version of Flash Player for Linux, 9,0,48,0. (I was using a previous version of the Flash player (7,0,68,0) before which led to incessant crashing later on in games.

Unfortunately, that bug is not unheard of. What happened is that your client lost its http connection to the server, so you never got Bomb's move. This can happen even when your connection to the Internet is still up and running. The workaround is to assume this bug has happened when Bomb hasn't moved in too long. You must close your client and sit down at the table again from the game room. This may cost you a minute of reserve, but at least you get to play out the game. This bug has been such a nuisance for so long that Omar finally re-wrote the client. You can set your preferences to use Flash Client version 2 here: http://arimaa.com/arimaa/gameroom/selectClient.cgi The new client is still in testing, but hopefully it will not suffer from the disconnection problem, because it is not using http. We are hoping the new client proves stable and tested enough for use in the World Championship in January. I hope this helps, and welcome to Arimaa!

Well, I tried version 2, and so far have found it worse. When I submit my move, it doesn't update the game board to show that it's my opponent's move and the clock keeps counting down. When it does its periodic refresh, it does reset things to the right time, though, so this isn't a big problem. The killer is that it doesn't show my opponent's move until many seconds, even up to a couple of minutes into my turn. This is playable, just about, with a two minute per turn game. It wouldn't be with a one minute per turn setting. I can sort of get round this by reloading the client every time I think it ought to be my move, but this is non-ideal, and the one minute per turn bots are likely to be much more problematic when you have only a few seconds to respond to them. My client problems are really going some way to ruin the enjoyment of Arimaa for me at the moment; I'm finding it hard to concentrate on the game itself when I'm spending much of my time fighting the client.

Semi-amusing postscript: a few games later I played bot_Loc2005P2, and got to a position where I had a huge material advantage. I was bored enough to fancy a shot at taking all its pieces though I had a rabbit four off the goal, whereupon it sat stoically letting its time count down until it lost on time. I was more than a little worried by this (until the result was verified) even though the main gameroom assured me it was its move. So, sometimes bots do lose on time too, which only adds to the confusion.

Ah, yes, Loc's propensity to despair when its elephant is blockaded or captured is also a known bug. It never occurred to me, though, that in combination with the interface bug, the bot's collapse makes it appear that you are about to unjustly lose on time yourself. Apparently BlackKnight has fixed this bug so that now Loc resigns instead of timing out. If Omar finds the time, he can replace Loc2005 and Loc2006 on the ladder with Loc2007 or (in a few months) Loc2008.
