Arimaa Forum - more categories?

The Arimaa Forum is a very helpful tool for new players and old players alike. However, after trying to find a specific topic in the general forum, I was unsuccessful due to the fact that there are now 8,000+ posts. Even using the search function is very hit and miss.

Is it possible that all of the posts in the forum can be divided into several subcategories?

Here is how I might divide it:

Strategy/Tactics
Piece Evaluation/Handicap
Ratings Discussion
Tournaments
Botbashing Records/Discussion
Bot issues/suggestions
Web Interface issues/suggestions
FAQ/New Player Assistance
Puzzles/Variants
Announcements/Rules - (Omar posts only)
Misc

If this is possible, I would be willing to help out with the process of subdividing the posts into categories.

Also, if this is possible, we can have a discussion on what categories everyone would like. My list above is just a rough draft. We don't want to have too many categories - 10-12 max or else it will be too much of a burden on posters to try and figure out which folder to post their message to.

Please post with any thoughts.

Good idea, mistre.  The Players/General is large enough to be split.  Thanks for volunteering to sort existing threads.

I would tend to go with three or four sub-topics instead of ten or twelve.  The ability to find the post one is looking for has to be balanced against the convenience of reading the latest and figuring out where to post.  In fact, the main benefit of sub-categories as far as I am concerned is not easier lookup of old posts, but rather the ability to ignore entire threads that one finds uninteresting.  I will probably continue to read all forum posts in all topics, so for me the most convenient thing would be a single, unified Forum, but I can understand if not everyone is interested in everything.

So my suggestion would be to split this group into
1) (sticky) FAQ / newcomer questions / report problems and suggestions
2) Tournaments / events / botbashing (including rules discussions for all three)
3) General Discussion

I'm not sure topics like ratings, strategy, puzzles, etc. have enough specialized traffic to warrant separate folders.  The time to make a separate folder for ratings, for example, is when a subset of folks are bombing the general group with a ratings discussion that doesn't interest the majority.

Just my $0.02; alternative perspectives welcome.

Great suggestion Mark. I also have a hard time hunting down a particular post at times. I agree the General Discussions category has become too crowed and needs to be split up a bit. But it's tough deciding how that should be done in terms of exact categories. Maybe we can discuss that further here.

Another catagory that I think would suggest is something like a "Introduce Yourself" area where new members can post about themselves. The current members should probably also post something there. I am seeing a lot of new members and it would be nice to know more about them.

I certainly don't mind handing the Admin keys to you or  another senior member of the community to help organize it.
