How does scoring work?

I'm curious how Arimaa games are scored. I find in my games that the "score" is very misleading. For instance, I have lately been playing against p4n1q a lot, and invariably, I have a much higher score in the early game, which starts to drop in the endgame, and then he wins. What's the criteria for scoring?

If the score would infallibly be higher the closer you are to win, a bot who would always pick the highest scoring move would be sure to win the game and Arimaa would be much simpler than it is today...

You should pretty much ignore the score. It heavily rewards advancing rabbits, which is not always a good thing until the end of the game.

Please ignore the score. At one time it was used to determine the winner if the game did not finish within the preset game time. But it is no longer used.
