site reset?

I was having trouble accessing the site earlier which was no big deal but I just got on and 1 of my 3 postal games is still listed as being played (the other two just vanished) and the one that is there is now on move 0. Also, it seems like every thread of the forum has a new post. Um ... whats up?

I am seeing similar issues. About 3 hours ago I opened some of the postal games in which it was my turn to move and the game loaded a blank board (like move 0). These games have since vanished and I can only see the postal games in which it is not my turn to move.

From Omar: Quote:bot_Cluess2011CC went into a wild loop of writing to a log file and filled up the disk. |
| Hopefully the missing postal games can be recovered from off-site backup.

A filled up disk causes major problems for the database and other programs that write to files. I'm not sure what tripped Clueless2011CC, but at the same time there was also an attack from a computer in China that was trying common usernames and passwords and caused the btmp log file to get really big. I'll see if I can recover the postal games.

| Good grief. I can't imagine Arimaa being important enough for anyone to care about attacking. Hopefully this was just a random attack (i.e. not targeted for any reason to do with Arimaa), and therefore won't be repeated or sustained. Can you tell if the attacker ever successfully logged in? Is there some kind of standard defense to block login attempts from IP addresses with lots of consecutive failures?

I'm not able to find these games. I think the disk being full caused them to not get saved properly. Most of the other postal games seem OK though. Maybe just the ones that were open when the disk became full were lost.

| The most popular tool for this is probably http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/ It's also not a bad idea to just use public key auth and disable password login altogether. Janzert

I lost at least three games: all the ones in which it was my turn to move. They weren't all open.
