Arimaa Variant

I think an interesting variant of Arimaa would be to replace the pairs of equally powerful units (Horses, Dogs and Cats) by gradually more powerful single units. Example : Elephant > Camel > Tiger > Unicorn > Horse > Dog > Cat > aardvark... Or any other animals...

Glad to see someone else suggesting variants! I like the aardvark. It's just a funny animal. Our top-rated HvH player, Fritzlein, is a longstanding advocate of promoting one of the horses to a higher-level piece, so that there are no equal pairs larger than a dog.

Interesting, but changing only one pair might create irregularities.

This would, unfortunately, destroy the ability to be played with a chess set

Well you could then use small bumper stickers or markers to indicate which piece is stronger.

| Changing one pair can be done by inverting one of the rooks.

We just need removable pedestals for holding inverted knights and bishops, right?

Or a simple levitation spell could hold the board and original pieces upside down while the variant pieces remain upright. (My dad thought this one up!)

| What about turning one half of the board and the normal stickers 90o one way and the variant pieces 90o the other way?
