Why are there so many players on Arimaa all of a sudden? Lots of new players, Lots of old players... Are you doing some kind of secret advertising that I don't know about Omar?? This is great!

Once in a while Arimaa gets metioned on a forum or a blog somewhere and we get a burst of new players. I don't know what is causing the busrt of activity from the old players.

I found out through Games Magazine about two years ago. But the upcoming tournament might be the cause. I'm still deciding on whether I can play, but it's looking doubtful.

I found out about Arimaa through Wikipedia. I don't suppose, however, that Wikipedia is a major source of new Arimaa players, even though the encyclopedia as a whole has broken into the top 300 Web sites in the world. I suspect most of the growth in Arimaa server play is still coming from word of mouth and computer science professors giving class projects. Yes, the recent spike in activity is probably mostly due to the upcoming championship and challenge match.

This is truly amazing. For the twenty-four hours that were Wednesday, October 13 my local time, I count 36 games, involving thirteen different humans. And that's on a weekday! For contrast the average in October 2003 was 17.9 games per day, and in the first six months of 2004 the average was 12.2 games per day.

I noticed a lot of players joining lately from Hungary. I looked in the server logs and found that Arimaa got mentioned on this Hungarian site: http://www.szanalmas.hu/

Amazing what even a tiny bit of publicity can do when well placed.

| You can get a free download at http://www.smart-games.com/arimaa.html but you have to pay 20 USD for the full version. I recommend paying: I certainly got my money's worth for mine!

I paid with PayPal instead of giving a credit card number, which takes care of the security issue. The most you could lose is the amount you pay, and even that's vanishingly unlikely. Fotland has a good business reputation to protect -- SmartGames is for real.

I followed the instructions on paypal.com. I don't know if things are different now that E-Bay owns PayPal, but when I did it, I simply gave the account number of my checking account. PayPal made two small deposits into my account so that I could verify it was actually me by telling them how many cents they had given me. Then I authorized my bank to put a certain amount of money into PayPal, which I have used several times to buy things on-line. By now I've probably used it with a dozen different vendors, and I have never had any problems. Strangest of all, PayPal even gives me 2.8% interest on the money I leave there, which is more than my bank was giving me anyway! If you try it, I hope it works for you too.
