I'm curious about Arimaa players' Arimaa ratings versus any other abstract board game rating that they may have:  Chess (USCF, FIDE); Go, et cetera...

I was wondering if there is any useful information that can be gleaned; especially as I'm amazed at the quality of the Arimaa fans commentary and analysis.  (Adanac and Megajester on the recent World championship commentary; Karl's book; Qswanger for multiple abstract game championships; on and on...)

I've played one rated game here, so my Arimaa rating may not be useful yet, but my chess rating is "A" (1987 USCF.)

I'm very curious if there is some kind of correlation of ratings; and if so:  what?  Which?  Do Go players have a greater affinity for Arimaa?  Chess players?  Bridge?  Hey, I'm open to All strategy-driven games...

Please list your current abstract games ratings here, if you will.

And my apologies if this is a re-thread.

My CFC Chess Rating is 2067 though I haven't competed in a CFC tournament for (oh my goodness) 12 years!

I've tried Go and Contract Bridge but neither game really excited me enough to pursue any further.  I can see why they're interesting games for many people and maybe I would have grown a deeper appreciation for them if I had stuck with them a bit longer.  Arimaa, on the other hand, had me hooked during the very first game   Smiley

I have a provisional junior scholastic chess rating of around 800 after two games played. I hated it so much, I'm never going back. I play both contract bridge and go but neither in a rated system.

My USCF rating was about 1600, including only one tournament after high school.

I never played Go enough to get a formal rating, but from a small number of games I supposed my strength to be around 9 kyu.

I did play contract bridge enough to get a rating, but didn't officially get one because the ACBL rating system is so ridiculous I refused to pay membership dues.  My Lehman rating on okbridge was slightly below 50, i.e. slightly below average.

There are no poker ratings except for money; in my lifetime I have won more money than I have lost at poker, but only by virtue of playing at the lowest-limit tables I could find.

In short, I have never played any game exceptionally well before Arimaa.  I think my high rating at Arimaa is a combination of learning the game at a time when I needed a distraction from the rest of my life, and the fact that Arimaa's defensive nature aligns well with my personality.  Perhaps I would have gotten better ratings at other games had I stuck with them longer, but no game has made me want to stick with it as much as Arimaa has.  (No disrespect intended for chess, Go, bridge, and poker: great games all.)

I am a middling 1 kyu in Go. I haven't actually played that much Arimaa. Since I already have Go as my main abstract strategy game of preference, I am mainly drawn to Arimaa for the engineering and research challenge of writing a strong computer program for the game. The entry barrier to developing a program that can come near the state-of-the-art seems to be somewhat lower in Arimaa than in Go, where a great deal more effort has been invested so far.

Despite my game room rating (~2000), I hardly think I'm on par with anyone actually at that level - a great portion of it is from when I climbed the bot ladder. Which actually wasn't hard for me at all, so perhaps I could actually become okay at this game. If I invested the time. Grin I do hope to find more time to devote to Arimaa eventually.

My grandfather is an avid chess & bridge player and taught me the chess moves when I was little. I now beat him about half the time (though this probably has just as much to do with him getting older as me getting good) and manage around 1600 on internet chess sites. I could probably do a bit better but life has just been so full I haven't been able to do anything with chess properly since my mid-teens. We also play bridge sometimes. Go however is not something we ever played very much.

I used to play Chess up through middle school, and won a fair number of age-restricted tournaments and placed in States. I think my rating was in the mid-1500s when I decided the Chess Club was too much work because we switched from just playing to studying theory and learning openings and such. and so I dropped out. I still play from time to time unofficially, and I'm fairly sure I've gotten better since then, by being slightly less impulsive, so maybe mid-1600s?

My FICS and Arimaa ratings are around the same right now. ~1600. Never got rated for Go. Don't think I'm that good.

My chess rating was nearly at Junior Spark when I was a first-year.  Since then Harry had me doing a bunch of other things and I haven't played.  The Gryffindor quidditch side won the Quidditch Cup in my 5th and 6th years, but that doesn't get you rated.

I played a lot of casual chess during my school days; never played in tournaments though, so I don't know what I would have been rated. I did get out of homeworks and won candy a few times by beating my teachers in 7th and 8th grade Smiley. At one point I wanted to get much better at chess, but gave up after realizing I'm just not good at memorizing openings. My chess rating on Internet chess sites was in the 1600's. I tend to make a lot of tactical blunders in chess.

I've also played Go online, but probably not enough to have a meaningful rating.

Sweet.  You are talking about the 10x10 version with flying queens?
