a way to view the Arimaa board

One way to view the Arimaa board is as four overlapping fields of 5x5 each. Each trap square is the center of a 5x5 field. Tell me if you have a novel view of the Arimaa board.

This may be detrimental but I tend to see it as 3 runways. center east and west. I have noticed that I play my strongest when I can focus my opponent on a single runway and then switch their focus to the opposite side and then back again. Think like tennis (making them run back and forth tires them out much quicker). Opponents rated lower than me seem to have more difficulty with this type of play than with straight attacking whereas higher rated players are able to deal with it better making me think that viewing the board in this fashion loses its strength at the upper levels.

I see the traps as holes covered with a board. the holes are surrounded by 4 levers. Each lever when pushed down keeps the board from moving down, the lever is attached to a spring so that when you let go of it it moves up. When a friend is on the trap you will keep your lever down and prevent him from falling down the hole, if it's an enemy then you'll release the lever and unless there's one of his friends holding down one of the other levers, he'll fall.

I appreciate the contributions to this thread. However, ginrunner's idea of 3 runways doesn't match my real experience. I have found that after my material has been cleared out by being tossed in the trap square, my opponents tend to run a rabbit right through the trap square to the back row.
