I got a request to show how players distribute their steps among the different piece types. The result is on the wiki.

Interesting; thanks for posting this. I wonder whether my proportions have changed over the years as my playing style has changed. Two quickies that I notice: (1) Naveed moves the enemy camel more than any other experienced played. This jibes perfectly with my observation of his playing style as being totally focused on taking a camel hostage. (2) Hanzack and chessandgo move their dogs rather more than average. This makes me suspect I am too focused on EMHH and need to see the piece relationships further down the board.

So PMertens focuses far more on rabbit-pulling than other top players. I wonder if that's because he played more in the defensive era of Arimaa or because he really enjoys playing with enemy rabbits? I suspect the latter, but it's probably a combination of both. I'm surprised at how extreme my results are. I'm moving my rabbits too often, my elephant not enough and I really should chase the enemy camel more If these stats actually do correlate with playing style then I'm probably most similar to Blue22, Harren and Chegorimaa.

Most players move their elephant most often. I expect this is because they rarely lost it during the game. Similarly owner's rabbits are moved often as they remain the whole game. I would definitely bet the rabbits are much more active in the endings and most of the games end by a rabbit step. I expect the statistic has small meaning in the endings and I would be much more interested in its restriction to the opennings. Here are some filter ideas: A) First X turns in a game (X about 20?) B) Turns prior first capture. C) Turns while each player has each kind of piece D) Whole game is counted I suppose results of D) were presented, all remaining cases seemed to me have value.

The default order of the table is now based on WHR.
