Using twitch.tv for broadcasts

Hi,
it started with boo in the chat:
10:52:59 Boo i wonder did anybody consider using smth like http://www.twitch.tv/directory for commentating?
10:54:36 chessandgo I didn't know twitch
10:57:57 Boo this might end up catching some random viewer, that is just browsing the games
10:59:22 Boo like me who just joined to listen to commentaries of some random game "Tera"

And i have to say, i think this idea is a really really good one. I have also caught myself wathing random games, when hanging around on twitch and getting interested in them. Also it would make advertising somehow easier. When i started, those vimeo-videos by Fritzlein and c+g were really cool and kept me intrested, but some live-video is again much better to catch ppl.

Right now arimaa provides a good introduction in "How to play yourself" but when looking around on the net, i have the feeling, that nowadays it is much more efficient to provide a "how is it played at all" at first, with some decent commentary.
Just looking at how many ppl got interested in Dota2 (computer game) after TheInternational (a big tournament sposnsored by valve, the publisher od dota2). Because what happened? They basically broadcasted all their games, put a welltalking commentator in there, who was able to somehow explain the big mess on the screen, while giving the spectators the feeling, that they understood at least part of the tactical complexity.
Now you may argue that this is a huge example with no relevance to something small as arimaa. But when looking around on the net, that is a way quite often used by even small projects, kickstarters etc. And a successful one. I don't think arimaa could lose anything by trying that way. Wink
Just make one big arimaa-twitchacc and let whoever commentates the games commentate via that one Smiley And if it bing just 3 more players it would be a success. (oh, and if you like, you can gain some ad-money from twitch, but won't be much for the expected viewercount Tongue)

Good idea. A couple years ago I evaluated livestream.com, justin.tv and another one, which I don't recall. But for the free service the ad interruptions and pauses in the stream due to buffering made me conclude that it wasn't quite ready yet. Also there was about 30 second lag, but that wasn't a show stopper. I didn't evaluate the paid service; it seemed too expensive at the time. I don't know what the situation is now and I had never heard of twitch.tv. Maybe things are better now. If anyone has tried broadcasting from this server, please chip in and let us know what you thought of it.

Seems that twitch requires a large audience to even get started:

If you were to click the link http://www.twitch.tv/directory and keep clicking "Load more", you would find out that there are more games that have audience less than 10 rather then more than 10. Having ~30 viewers would get us near top100.

OK, thanks for that. So maybe they allow anyone to stream. Can someone try out this service and post their experience with it.
