Oh, the team name has something to do with geography?  I thought it was about this Johnny Cash song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRlj5vjp3Ko).

My wife thought Ring of Fire was hilarious, but that's because she was thinking of Terrance and Phillip (if you know the reference).  ;D

I don't know why we need another World League.  The Ring of Fire has already proven to be superior to the rest of the world...TWICE.

I'd like to get a sense of how many active players we'll have this year on the Ring of Fire team.  New players are always welcome!!  Last year's roster is listed below -- if you either plan on being active this year or if you wish to have your name removed please let me know.

Also, megajester has proposed a couple of new live/postal collaborative team matches in the forum.  If you'd be interested in participating in either of those matches please mention that as well.

Thanks,
Greg

I didn't receive any responses from the first message.  Does anyone want to play for the Ring of Fire in 2011?

Thanks John.  So we're up to 3 confirmed members now:

Adanac
Nombril
The_Jeh

If anyone is looking to join a World League team we're open to all players of any rating.

Title: Re: -- RING OF FIRE --

The Ring of Fire needs players for next week's games.  In particular we need to recruit low-rated players so that we don't exceed the maximum rating limit.

Please send me a message to me (or reply to this thread) if you wish to play next week.

If you wish to join the Arimaa World League and are unsure of which team to join, please join the "Ring of Fire" team.  We are in desperate need of low-rated or brand new players that will fill out our roster.  If you want to play more games of Arimaa this is a great opportunity, even if (especially if) you have no/little previous experience.  We only have 3 committed players at the moment and we're too highly-rated to fit within the rules.

Also for a variety of reasons, I don't have the time or energy to play Arimaa anymore.  I won't be playing in the World League unless by necessity so if anyone wants to take over the captaincy, feel free to do so.  But if nobody volunteers then I can continue in this role for the remainder of the season.  I can act as captain from the office, which doesn't take too much effort.

That's a blow to the Arimaa community.  I note, however, that you didn't say that are bored with Arimaa, so I take this as a case of real life intervening over games.  I hope that in future your life rearranges itself to leave time for Arimaa once again.  We'll still be here waiting for you.  :)  But mostly, I just hope all is well with you and yours.  Peace be with you.

Thanks Fritz.  I'm sure I'll be back to playing full-time at some point in the future.  I hope to play in the upcoming World Championship but only as a player.  I likely won't have much time for commentating, reporting or even observing games.

The Ring of Fire team doesn't have many players so I'll probably be playing a few games in the upcoming weeks, though.

Friends,

I would not mind to join Ring Of Fire but I'm a new player who still tries to overcome bots with rating around 1500-1550. If I'm going to join someone has to explain me what, when, how and with whom I'm expected to do.
Also, I want to know how much time I have to invest (approx). Beyond that, I don't see any problem and I'm willing to join.

Thanks in advance.

Excellent, you're on the team.  You can find all the league rules here:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/mwiki/index.php/League_Rules

Our first games begin next week and will continue into the late fall.  The time commitment required is 1 game every 2 weeks but, of course, you don't have to play every game.  If you volunteer to play 3 times during the season, the total commitment would be approximately 6 hours or fewer.  To volunteer to play, you can send a personal message to me on this website or e-mail me at grmagne@yahoo.com.

There are 3 volunteers from each team every week, sorted from strongest to weakest.  As a relatively new player you'll almost certainly be paired against the opposing team's weakest player every time.

There is a scheduler that allows you to pick your most convenient times of the week.  So you can influence your scheduled game time but you won't always get your preferred times (if, for example, your opponent is in a distant time zone).  I can't find the link to the scheduler but I'll provide that as soon as possible.

Post by megajester on Aug 4th, 2011, 9:52am
Arimaaphile has been added to the list at the top of this thread, and the official ratings list on the wiki.

I haven't yet started the event on the system, so you can't enter your times on the scheduler yet, but I will as soon as possible...

Adanac said it correctly, but it's hard to imagine how difficult is it to be available on 60 two hour slots out of 119. So be prepared to plan corresponding weeks to allow (one) dynamic replanning.

... sorry to step into another's team discussion :)

Did you also get scheduled for a low-preference slot?  Nombril and I are both in the U.S. and somehow I got scheduled for a 4th-best preference!  I think the scheduler is malfunctioning, because I had lots of 1st-preference slots available, and because the 8:00pm Sunday slot used to be a high preference for me (e.g. in the World Championship) before I started going to bed a bit earlier.  That is to say, I expect the wrong set of preferences for me was used to pick my slot.

I'm on vacation this week, so had some very odd times in for my schedule.  8:00 was the first evening slot on the weekend I even had marked as available.

(It is a 4 for me as well, hopefully I'll be back in time! I'll be 2-1/2 hours from home, and will be getting on the road between 3 and 6 depending on how the wind is...)

I can play Monday night at 7:00 PM (central) if that is a better time and we are allowed to play a few hours after the scheduler window closes.

Welcome aboard, you're on the team!  The next games will be the week of August 24-28 and if you'd like to play you can let me know by personal message.  I'll be sending out an invitation to everyone on the team later this week.

I'm sending a message to the whole team this morning regarding our next match versus Europa.  For the people that are new to Arimaa, simply check the message hyperlink at the top of the screen.

Great thanks for volunteering.  If you have any questions about your upcoming game let me know.

By the way, you should have been receiving personal messages regarding our Ring of Fire team.  In the future, you can respond to those messages directly so that our list of interested players remains secret from the other teams.

Yes, I see the messages. Sorry for revealing the secret, it won't happen again. Luckily the opponents don't know the other two players, so this is no big deal I guess ;)

We still need volunteers for next week's game.  Experience doesn't matter: even if you've never played a game of Arimaa before in your life, feel free to step forward :).  As long as you can play next week without forfeiting I'd be very happy with that.

The Ring of Fire is always looking for new players, and this league is a great way to practice against other human players.  If you're interested, please send me a private message.  Thanks!

Arimaaphile won't be able to play his game this week so we'll need a substitute.  Ideally it should be someone with a rating in the 1300-1700 range.  New players can join, so this offer is open to everyone that's not already in the World League  ;)

Fantastic!  Welcome to the Ring of Fire.  At the top of the screen you have a link to your personal messages.  Each week I’ll be looking for 3 volunteers through private messages so that other teams don’t know who our players will be.  The boards are ranked 1, 2, 3 with the strongest players on board #1, so that games are more competitive.

If you’re available this weekend, you can fill in on board #3 where we need a player.  To submit your time preferences, follow this link:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/events/reg.cgi?e=2011awl

For the league Home Page, you can go here:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/mwiki/index.php/2011_Arimaa_World_League

(We just finished 2011, season 1.  We’re at season 2 now).

What error message did you get?  Try logging back in and check if it saved your preferences anyway.  I think that happened to me once.

If you're still having difficulty we'll notify megajester (league commissioner) ASAP because I think the scheduler will run today.

A couple of minor points for the 2nd match:

I just realized that Boo has moved ahead of Simon on the WHR list.  According to the League Rules, we have to switch Boo to board #2 and Simon to board #3.

Also, Europa's Round 2 roster is currently being displayed as Ring of Fire's Round 1 roster on the Wiki.  I'm actually kind of curious to see what their real lineup will be  ;)

In this case it was a complete coincidence that I happened to check the page 5 minutes after you updated it.

It's cool that all 4 teams spent nearly identical amounts in this round.
