Yes, that's a very good article, managing to promote Arimaa without ramming down the reader's throat, and in the context of a wider discussion. Nice one Fritz!  :)

PS: I was a little shocked at the end to read the Fritz is still a PhD student. For some reason in my head he was a professor  ::)

Getting a PhD is no small matter, sometimes it can take a long time. I've heard of some theses that took a couple of decades to be written.

I'm well aware of that - I did mine full time and still spent nearly 5 years from starting it to actually graduating.

(That was 3-and-a-half years ago now, I'm now doing a fairly dull and nowhere near well-paid enough job which has nothing to do with academia. The perils of choosing an esoteric area of pure mathematics for your PhD and then realising that you're not good enough or interested enough to make a career of it :-/)

Thanks, robinz!  I tried to make it interesting enough to a general chess audience to justify talking about Arimaa as much as I did.  I was somewhat repetitive and not very profound, but hopefully I said a few things that were clear and useful.  It is comforting to hear from a chess player that I managed to balance it reasonably well.

Heh, I do like to teach, but I like being a student better.  I'm sorry to hear that you have to take a job that doesn't use your math.  With any luck, I will still be a student in another ten years!  :)

If this was a reference to me, I'm not sure I qualify as a "chess player". I was very keen in my teenage years (for reference, I'm 31 now), but haven't played in around 10 years now and am not remotely interested in taking it up again.

I only started playing chess around a year ago. Recently I stumbled over Arimaa, which is drawless, balanced chess with cooler rules. :-X

Heh, sorry about that.  I got you confused with Robin Swinkels.  Robin is apparently a more common name than I thought.  :)

I'm still waiting for the first chess grandmaster to say, "I used to be very keen on chess, but now I have given it up for Arimaa."

This event would be probaly a groundbreaking progress for Arimaa. Having a grandmaster on our side may open the door for far more chess players to renegade to the dark side.   ;D

If Arimaa had existed for as long as chess, I doubt anyone would want to play the game that is drawn so often and if it is not then heavily favours one side.
