Title: Re: Wired Article on Computer Go Post by Fritzlein on May 14th, 2014, 10:22am Thanks for the link to an interesting and well-written article. This was the article that Omar had said was in the works, and which I had hoped would mention Arimaa. Alas, it doesn't fit stylistically to include the Arimaa Challenge. It is much more dramatic to set Go apart from all other abstract strategy games: "But the fact is that of all the world’s deterministic perfect information games — tic-tac-toe, chess, checkers, Othello, xiangqi, shogi — Go is the only one in which computers don’t stand a chance against humans." It's too bad that the author chose to focus on the man-vs.-machine battle in Go in particular rather than more broadly, in which case the balance of skill in Arimaa, Havannah, Hex, etc., would also be relevant. It is also too bad that, having chosen such a narrow focus, the author wants to make sweeping conclusions at the end. Take your pick; don't try to have your cake and eat it too. |
