Title: 2008 Arimaa Festival; You are invited Post by omar on Sep 29th, 2008, 7:48am I am planning to have a get together for Arimaa players on Saturday Oct 11 at Brekenridge Park near Dallas, TX. It will be from 11am to whenever. Pizza, punch and snacks will be provided. Myself, Aamir, Karl, Naveed, and Arif plan to attend. I would love to meet some of the other players in person also. So if you are free that weekend and Dallas isn't too much of a drive for you, plan on attending. The main event will be a team vs team Arimaa game. We had a great time at the last get together and I hope this time will be even more fun. Here is the exact location: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=32.986897,-96.624308&spn=0.001255,0.002449&t=h&z=19 The weather in Dallas is really great this time of the year. |

Title: Re: 2008 Arimaa Festival; You are invited Post by Fritzlein on Sep 29th, 2008, 1:37pm Omar, what about your daughters and soldier and silump? I don't think I will be able to convince Elmo to play unless the kids are playing too. Some of the rest of you may be interested in Omar's team concept. For our last Arimaa-in-the-park festival there were some two-player teams that didn't work out so well, because the stronger player just dominated the decision-making process, making it boring for the weaker player. The idea of the new team game would be to allow people of different levels to all participate meaningfully. Tentative rules: 1. The game is played on a master board that no one on either team can see except for each team's currently designated representative. In addition, each team will have a private board for analysis and discussion in locations where they can't spy on each other. 2. Each team has a captain. For each move the team captain selects which player will represent the team for that move. No player can be team representative for the (N+1) time until all players on the team have been team representative N times. 3. When the Gold team representative is ready to move, s/he calls on the Silver team to select a new representative. The Silver representative comes to the board, hopefully prepared by team discussion, but not yet knowing what move s/he will face. The Gold team representative makes a move. After that, the Silver representative can't leave the board or communicate with her/his team until after s/he has made a move. To discourage cheating, the Silver team shouldn't even know the Gold team's last move. While the Silver representative is thinking, the Gold representative can update her/his team as to what the current position is. When the Silver team representative is ready to move s/he calls on the Gold team to select a new representative, and so on. ----- The point of temporarily isolating the representative from the rest of the team is to prevent the best team member from dictating moves. Instead, the team will have to explain to the representative what is going on in the position so that the representative can react properly to whatever move is played. Judging from the Mob game, it will be very hard to guess the other team's moves even one ply in advance, so it won't work to say "If he plays A, do B, but if he plays C, do D, etc." Hopefully discussing general strategy will be the only way the team can help the weaker members. Indeed, given that the difference between a good move and a great move is much smaller than the difference between a good move and a bad move, the game will very likely be decided by the play of the weakest members of each team. Therefore good team strategy should be all about helping the weaker players understand basic issues, and not at all about fine strategic points and precise variations. That's the theory, anyway. We'll see how it works. :) |

Title: Re: 2008 Arimaa Festival; You are invited Post by omar on Sep 29th, 2008, 10:43pm Oh, it goes without saying that the kids are going to come. In fact ever since the last event they've been asking me when we're going to have the next one. |

Title: Re: 2008 Arimaa Festival; You are invited Post by omar on Oct 11th, 2008, 4:10pm Just got back from the Arimaa Festival and uploaded the photos. We had a great time. You can check it out at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/20979381@N02/sets/72157607946215991/ The Team-Team game worked out pretty good. It kept everyone involved and actively discussing their plans. The only bad part was that we had a lot of problem with the wind blowing over the pieces on the gold team planning board. Many thanks to Karl for using his picture perfect memory for recreating the position from memory. Next time it might be better to do this indoor. We also learned that it would be better for each team to keep two boards; one as the master and the other for planning. Also we did not have a clock to track the time per move; that would have helped to keep the game moving faster. |

Title: Re: 2008 Arimaa Festival; You are invited Post by Fritzlein on Oct 11th, 2008, 4:35pm For the curious, the teams were as follows: Gold omar (captain) zaidq Sana Aamir BilalQ silump5 Silver naveed (captain) ArifSyed Amina soldier hamzahq Sameer (substituted for ArifSyed's last move) I was the referee. Below is the score of the game, with the names of the players who made each move withheld to protect the innocent. Some day there will be a facility to enter games into the main database so that they can be linked just by number, but for now if you want to replay the hilarious fun, you will have to cut and paste it into the plan window. http://arimaa.com/arimaa/games/planGame.cgi 1g Ee2 Md2 Hb2 Dd1 Cb1 Hg2 De1 Cg1 Ra1 Rc1 Rf1 Rh1 Ra2 Rc2 Rf2 Rh2 1s ed7 mb7 ha7 de7 cc7 hg7 dh7 cf7 ra8 rb8 rc8 rd8 re8 rf8 rg8 rh8 2g Ee2n Ee3n Ee4n Ee5n 2s ed7s ed6s mb7s hg7s 3g Hb2n Hg2n Md2e Me2n 3s ed5e ee5e cc7e rc8s 4g Ee6w de7s de6s Ed6e 4s de5w dd5n ef5w re8s 5g dd6s Ee6w dd5s Ed6s 5s ee5s dd4s ee4w ed4w 6g Me3n dd3e de3e df3x Me4s 6s mb6s mb5s ec4e ed4s 7g Ed5s Ed4w De1n Me3e 7s ha7s ha6s ha5s ha4s 8g Ec4s Hb3s Ec3w Rh2n 8s ed3n ed4w mb4n mb5n 9g Eb3n ha3e hb3e Eb4s 9s hc3e mb6e mc6e rb8s 10g Eb3n Mf3w Me3e hd3e 10s ec4e ed4e he3w hd3s 11g Eb4e Ec4e Ed4s Hb2n 11s ee4e ef4w Mf3n md6w 12g Hg3n Mf4s Mf3e Hg4e 12s ee4e ef4e re7s rd8e 13g Ed3w hd2n Ec3n hd3w hc3x 13s eg4w Mg3n Mg4n ef4e 14g De2n Hh4n Mg5w Mf5w 14s eg4w ef4n ef5s Me5e 15g Ec4n Ec5e Ed5e Mf5e 15s ef4n ef5s Mg5w 16g Hh5w Ee5w Mf5w Ed5w 16s ef4n cd7e mc6e md6n 17g Ec5e Rh3n Rh4w Hg5e 17s ef5s Me5e Mf5n Mf6x ef4n 18g Ed5n Hb3n Hb4n Hb5n 18s ef5w ee5w ed5w re8w 19g De3n De4n re6e De5n 19s ce7n md7e De6s me7s 20g Hb6w Ha6n ra8e Ha7n 20s me6n De5n rf6s 21g De6s De5s rf5w Ed6e 21s ec5e ed5s me7w ce8s 22g re5e Ee6s Ra2n Ra3e 22s ed4n De4w Dd4w ed5s 23g Ee5n Ee6w Ha8s Hh5w 23s rb7s rc7w md7w ed4e 24g Ed6e Ee6s Cg1n Cg2n 24s ee4w Dc4n ed4w 25g Ee5n Ee6w Cg3w Cf3n 25s hg6w rf5w Dc5w ec4n 26g Rb3n Db5w Da5s 26s hf6s mc7s rb6s mc6w 27g Cf4w Ce4s re5s Hg5n 27s mb6w ma6e Ha7s rb8e 28g re4e Ce3n rf4s rf3x Ce4e 28s ec5e ed5e ee5n ee6e 29g Da4n Ha6n Ed6e Cf4w 29s Hg6e ef6e hf5e hg5e 30g Ee6w ce7s ce6s Ed6e 30s rb7e mb6n mb7s Ha7e 31g Ee6n Ee7w rc7s Ed7w 31s eg6w Hh6w ef6w Hg6w Hf6x 32g Hb7w Ec7w mb6w rc6x Eb7s 32s ee6w ed6s ed5w hh5w 33g Rb4w rb5s Da5e Ce4s 33s hg5e Rg4n rc8w ce5n 34g rb4s Db5s rb3e rc3x Db4s 34s Rg5w hh5w Rf5n Rf6x hg5w 35g Eb6n ma6e mb6s Eb7s 35s hf5s hf4e hg4s hg3s 36g Ra4n Db3w Da3n Ra5n 36s rb8w rd8w rc8w mb5w 37g Ha7e Ra6n Hb7e rb8s 37s ce6w ec5n Hc7e ec6n 38g Eb6s rb7s rb6w Eb5n 38s ec7w rg8s rg7s dh7s 39g cd6w cc6x Hd7s Rf1e Dd1e 39s rg6s rg5e hg2n Rg1n 40g Eb6s ra6e rb6e rc6x Eb5n 40s ma5n Da4n 41g Eb6s Da5s Eb5n Da4s 41s rh5s rh4s rh3s dh6w 42g De1e Df1e Cb1n Cb2n 42s dg6s dg5s dg4w rf8w 43g Eb6s ma6e mb6e mc6x Eb5n 43s df4s Rf2w df3s re8w 44g Rc2n Rc3n Rc4n Rc5n 44s rd8w rh8w rg8w 45g Rc6n Hd6w Rc7e Rd7n |
