Title: 2010 Computer Championship Participants
Post by Tuks on Dec 13th, 2009, 4:37am
i thought it might be fun to talk about the competition, these are the different bots up for a position.

Bot_Clueless
Bot_Gnobot
Bot_OpFor
Bot_Quad
Bot_marwin
Bot_Badger
Bot_Pragmatictheory
Bot_Sharp

Its the first year where every single participant is being updated or has been updated recently.

You forgot bot_Rat, bot_akimot and several other bots that have made occasional appearances, like bot_amochi yesterday.  The first interesting question is how many of these developers are in a mind to try to qualify.  This year we are requiring many games against the benchmark bots, actually too many in my opinion.  I hope that no developers who would otherwise be interested are deterred by the long qualifying.  Ideally we will have at least nine developers vying for eight spots, to keep things interesting.

i had thought of akimot but he said he didnt have much time so i figured, even if he has time to go through the qualification, the 8 bots i mentioned would be stronger.

As for bot_rat, im interested in its progression but realistically, i dont think it stands much of a chance

Wow, bomb is not even on your list for contention!  What a difference a year makes.

I simply forgot Bomb.  Surely Fotland would qualify again in 2010, even with Bomb2005.

I have been hoping every year since 2005 that Fotland would resurface and take Bomb to new heights, but when I read sleepywind's thesis about all the action around monte carlo tree search for Go, suddenly a light went on for me and I understood why we haven't seen and won't see Fotland's return.  The field of computer Go is too exciting, too unsettled, and too competitive.  Before Fotland walks again among us, either computer Go will have to plateau, or the Arimaa Challenge prize will have to be raised to $1,000,000.  :P

Ha.  All I have to do is say something certainly won't happen and then it happens.  I hope the same jinx doesn't apply to the Arimaa Challenge itself, since I have been saying humans will hold on until 2020.  :-)

bot_sharp has entered...its going to be quite a wild card, because as far as i know it has been updated since its previous entry but i havent seen it play in almost a year so i cant guess how competitive it will be,

and Janzert, dont even think about keeping Opfor out now that we have 8 competitors without it!

Too bad that quad isn't in the championship... Wonder why? As it is one of the strongest bot around and would have had a very real chance at the title.
