Novacat claims he was afraid at this position; I saw no chances to prevail.

As it is history now I'd like to ask all the experts - is there a winning (or at least not losing) tactics for silver here?

It seems to me you are too much behind. The goal attack in the middle seems to be weak. I would expect fast gold goal on h file.
