Title: A Stroke of Insight Post by Polyfractal on Oct 9th, 2008, 8:40am Following a similar vein to previous threads, here is an exceptional talk given by Jill Bolte, a neurobiologist who experienced a stroke. Over about 10 years she has made a full recovery and decided to give a talk about her experience. Incredibly fascinating to hear her account of the event. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html |

How so? What part of her lecture did you find particularly offensive to your idea of sanity? Why was her account of reality any less correct than what you may describe, or the account given by someone who is deaf? Deaf individuals often describe the world in sounds and smells, a concept relatively foreign to us gifted with sight. Perhaps her use of the term "nirvana" put you on edge. While I agree with Janzert that her conclusion is a bit far reaching and her tone borderline overzealous, none of the substance of her lecture was idle musings of the deranged. The right/left brain divide is well documented as she described. Individuals that have their corpus callosum split experience similar feelings and emotions as well as conflict between their respective halves. A famous case is of a man that was trying to dress himself. One hand was pulling his pants up while the other was trying to pull down. Similarly, the division in function (abstract vs concrete, language vs form, etc) between the two halves is equally documented. |
