Title: Computer Learns Language by Playing Games Post by Nazgand on Jul 12th, 2011, 10:49pm Computer Learns Language by Playing Games (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/07/110712133330.htm) This is one of the more exciting advancements in AI. I wonder how good this would be at Arimaa if someone gave it Fritz' book. |

Title: Re: Computer Learns Language by Playing Games Post by megajester on Jul 13th, 2011, 2:52am Very very interesting. I don't like the mealy-mouthed way the results are being presented. "In the case of software installation, the system was able to reproduce 80 percent of the steps that a human reading the same instructions would execute." Oh yeah? What about the 20 percent of the steps it messed up? How important were they? Sure it's a nice start but I want a 99.9% success rate (results not steps) before I turn it loose on my machine. But the fact they've got the core principle working is amazing: Results-based hypothesis building. I was never a believer in the Chomskian "we talk with our sentences" approach to language, and I wonder if advances in AI such as this will cause it to be questioned all the more. Its like trying to study the design of cars from just an engineering standpoint by purposefully ignoring the fact that people use them to go places. |
