Title: Re: Gamers solve molecular puzzle Post by Migi on Sep 21st, 2011, 6:34pm I've played some Foldit before. It was quite a cool game. One problem I had with it is that I often didn't really know what to do. I nudged the protein a bit here and a bit there but didn't really get far. It was quite hard to get a good intuition about what would make your fold's score (calculated through some magic, probably very complicated algorithm) go up. But now that I think about it, I had the same with Arimaa, at first. When there's nothing to threaten, I found it hard to improve my position. But that goes away after some time, as you get more experienced you see more and more useful moves and potential strategies. On top of that, I see they've added quite a few new tools (designing your own proteins, sounds awesome) and apparently it has actually been able to produce some scientifically useful results. So I may check it out again. |
