Title: Game Over for Go Post by omar on Aug 7th, 2017, 2:36pm I was just wondering what the current status of AlphaGo was and found that it has recently defeated the world number 1 Go player. https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/27/15704088/alphago-ke-jie-game-3-result-retires-future Amazing achievement by the DeepMind team. Sad to see that AlphaGo will be retired. But it sounds like other engines are also playing at dan-9 level now, so at least the breakthroughs brought about by deep learning are getting passed on. We are definitely at a turning point for AI and the fall of Go will be looked at as the marker for the start of this new era. |

There may well be games that are even more difficult to program than Go, but advances in speed and programming methods, in particular Monte Carlo based ones, are indeed such that top players from now on (and for some time already, for that matter) cannot but rely on AI consultation. We'll see a battle between AI programs using the players as intermediary. Brave new world. Not necessarily less interesting though. |
