Title: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by Hollerschorle on Jan 9th, 2014, 7:24am Hi folks! Yes, 4 of the german players actually managed to meet in real life. After we discovered that we're not living that far from each other, we met in a restaurant south of Munich last Friday (Jan 3rd 2014). Alfons, Odin73, Thiagor and myself (Hollerschorle) were there to chat and, of course, play Arimaa. If anyone wants to join a future meeting don't hesitate to contact one of us. |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by Arimabuff on Jan 9th, 2014, 10:13am One of the early Arimaa champions Till Wiechers (screen name Robinson) is from Germany, his nephew also has an account but I don't remember his name. Maybe you could try to contact him. I see that his account has been accessed 48 days ago, so maybe he'd be interested. |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by Hollerschorle on Jan 14th, 2014, 10:12am Ok, ok, I knew i couldn't get away so easily ;) Actually there was no single winner, Thiagor won twice against Alfons, Odin73 won against me. |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by supersamu on Jan 14th, 2014, 7:24pm Maybe I will be able to join you sometime. If you weren´t so far away, I would have immediately said yes when you asked me. I hope to find cheaper connections to Munich. |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by GorgeTranche on Jan 15th, 2014, 1:45am @Supersamu: So where are you from exactly in Germany? I live way up north in Hamburg. Too far away for a game in Munich unfortunately ... |

I have to correct you - Alfons won the first game against me, after I had been too greedy and underestimated his goal attack ;-) I only won our second game. |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by Hollerschorle on Jan 16th, 2014, 6:43am Ok... thanks, Peter and sorry, Ulrich! By the time your 1st game ended I was desperately trying to break a horse frame, this might explain my confusion... |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by odin73 on Jan 16th, 2014, 10:48am Thank you Sebastian for the organizing of this cool event. We really all enjoyed the traditional bavarian food and of course the opportunity of some real life arimaa matches. 8) Concerning my win agaist you, I was quite lucky. First you missed the horse frame, a bit later a blunder by your side was giving me a comfortable position. Maybe all of us need more live training (I´m sooo rusty). A good reason to do both to meet again and to play more games in the gameroom.. ;) I think, 4 people at the same place was a german record. We may beat this number one day? I really hope so! |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by odin73 on Jan 16th, 2014, 1:29pm Hollerschorle and Thiagor joined with a Z-Man edition in their pocket. I must say, the boardgame looks better in reality than expected. Especially the playing with quite heavy pieces was a good feeling. Thiagor had a chess clock. Hollerschorle and me, we played with a normal smartphone for time control, but I think we forgot too often the running clock.. ;) By the way, anybody knows/has a good clock for playing arimaa? |

I believe, a chess clock is the closer that you can get. Maybe someday they'll manufacture arimaa clocks but I think it's still quite a while away. |

Any recommendation? I expect, there´s numberless products. Important for Arimaa would be to reach as close as possible the standard game time convention such as 60s/4m/100/0/4h/4m, i.e. a clock providing the move time, a starting reserve, maximum reserve for one move and move rest time accumulation would be fine. Maybe some smartphone Arimaa clock would be best (Thiagor used a chess clock App on his smartphone).. |

I don't believe that such an App exists yet. It's up to the Arimaa players to write one. The Arimaa clock is very specific, I don't think that it works for other games. |

Title: Re: Arimaa gathering in Bavaria Post by supersamu on Jan 17th, 2014, 5:36am I have an app on my Android called "Chess Clock for Android" and it has several types of time controls available. Sudden Death, Simple Delay, Fischer, Bronstein, Scrabble and Japanese Byo-Yomi. I don´t know what some of these mean, but the Fischer Time control is the same as the Arimaa time control, except that you can´t define the percentage of remaining move time that gets added to your reserve. The app also has no mechanism for preventing a player to think for his whole reserve time, but I don´t think this is such a big issue. This part of the Arimaa time control is there for the spectators and for protecting the players from using too much of their time. Players who go over the time limit for one move will have it more difficult later anyway. |

For iPhone/etc. I've been using the "A1 Game Clock", which has specialized support for Arimaa time controls. I think it was free. - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/a1-game-clock/id406947559?mt=8 |

I will probably visit a friend living near munich around easter. But I'm not sure about that yet. If so I could attend such a meeting. |
