Title: Ads by google
Post by omar on Feb 22nd, 2006, 3:02am
Im planning to put up some text ads from google on the arimaa site pretty soon.

I've been seeing these pop-up on a lot of web sites now and I've read that they do help generate some income for the site (monitizing the site as google puts it). So Im going to give it a try and see if it really works. If it does really well I'll be able to increase the yearly tournament prizes.

Awesome!  Best of luck with this.  I always felt a little greedy making requests when you do so much for us.  At the same time, I think a subscription fee would smother Arimaa to death in its crib, by cutting off the flow of new players.  (Not to mention the risk of driving away unemployed undergrads. ::))

Sounds like a good idea.  I'll be interested to see which ads come up.

I'm curious to know how much revenue this generates.  I agree that this is a good attempt to generate income without alienating players or putting a brake on Arimaa's growth in popularity.  If it doesn't work, I hope you eventually find some other way to "monetize" Arimaa.  You have given us (particularly me) so many fun times, I hope you can cash in at some point.

I tried adding text ads to the 'Logout' page, but it didn't go too well since there's not much content on that page.

I decided to put a search box instead and let people decide what kind of ads they are looking for.

And people may 'Logout' by closing the gameroom window, as I always do.
