Is there any way to play various bots without going through the ladder?

Yes, go to "Players", then "Top Rated Bots (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/gameroom/topRatedBots.cgi?r=1)" and then "Bots Available to Play (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/bots/index.cgi)".
