Title: Expert mode in javascript client
Post by knarl on Jun 29th, 2010, 10:52pm
Gday,

I've mentioned it in passing in another thread, but I'd just like to ask how the expert mode works in the javascript client? It's the only thing that has problems on my android browser.

I can make one step as the person I'm playing in expert mode, but on the next step, it just undoes the first step instead.

Since the non-expert controls work fine this struck me as odd. I thought I'd mention it in case it's an easy fix bug that just hasn't been noticed.

Cheers,
knarl.

How are you entering moves?  Do you hover, see an arrow, and click on the arrow?

Among the features of expert mode is that you can undo a move by clicking a trap, pass your remaining steps by clicking an opposing piece, and undo a step by clicking one of your own pieces.  These features can be useful when you get used to them, but they are highly non-intuitive.  I am guessing that you normally move pieces by clicking them, rather than by the hover-arrow method, so when you try to click pieces to move them in expert mode it just undoes steps.

I see the problem now, but it's not as simple as that.

You see, I never have problems when I play on the PC in expert mode, because I hover move, but on my android device, I use the touch screen so there's no way to hover <EDIT> without clicking at the same time <\EDIT>.

The work around is to use the plan window in non-expert mode.

Cool, now I can use those features when I play on the PC.

Cheers,
knarl.

Since it is not possible to hover over the pieces, I'm curious how you are moving the pieces even in non-expert mode, since it still requires hovering over the pieces to get the arrows.

My guess, although I'm not sure since I don't have that type of phone, is that the 'mouse' only moves when he touches the screen, so he has to click on a piece to get his 'mouse' to hover over it, and then he can click the arrow.

Correct.

OK, thanks for the explanation.
