Title: New bots Post by omar on Oct 18th, 2004, 10:33pm I added a couple of new bots to fill the gap between shallowBlue and Arimaazilla and the gap between Arimaazilla and Arimaanator. Arimaalon is an early version of Occam look up to 6 steps deep. ShallowBlue looks 4 steps and Arimaazilla looks 8 steps; so this bot should fit nicely in between. Arimaazon is also an early version of Occam that can look up to 30 steps deep (though it probably never gets past 12), but limited to making a move in 60 seconds. This bot will play better than Arimaazilla but probably not as good as Arimaanator. |

Title: Re: New bots Post by Fritzlein on Oct 22nd, 2004, 4:32pm The new bots are a fantastic idea. Thanks, Omar! (There keep being reasons to say that.) With more players on the server these days, there is a bot for everyone. Also, if newcomers play against a greater variety of bots, their ratings can't help but be more accurate (although maybe the improvement in accuracy is modest in practice). I'm curious about one detail, however. Why is ShallowBlue's rating fixed at 1129? Surely its true rating is closer 700. If we aren't going to let it play rated games to get a practical reading on its rating, then I suggest manually changing its rating to something not so deceptively high. |

Title: Re: New bots Post by omar on Oct 24th, 2004, 1:25pm Maybe I'll have shallowBlue play a series against Arimaalon tonight to give it a more accurate rating. |

That makes some sense. If Arimaalon wins every single game, it won't be terribly accurate, but it will be more accurate than at present, and more accurate than just guessing. |

Title: Re: New bots Post by Fritzlein on Oct 26th, 2004, 12:38pm Well, now Arimaalon is officially rated lower than ShallowBlue :o which is sort of silly. Another alternative to having the bots play a match against each other would be to allow humans to play ShallowBlue either rated or unrated. That way people who are just learning or experimenting still have an unrated bot to play against, but people who want to play rated games against ShallowBlue will do so, and eventually ShallowBlue's rating will become more accurate. |

Title: Re: New bots Post by MrBrain on Oct 27th, 2004, 8:52am ShallowBlue should play rated games against other bots. |

Title: Re: New bots Post by Fritzlein on Nov 7th, 2004, 7:47pm Suggestion: Now that we have unrated mode, why not have ShallowBlue offer rated games by default? Anyone can still play unrated if they like. And we can start beginners in unrated mode by default, so they don't start losing rating points until they are ready. With unrated mode coming on line, I don't see any reason for ShallowBlue not to play rated games. |

Title: Re: New bots Post by MrBrain on Nov 8th, 2004, 1:21pm Yes, I believe shallowblue should play rated games against everyone. |
