Title: piece values Post by Swynndla on Mar 7th, 2006, 3:50am In chess, the values of each piece has been mostly worked out (within a small variation) ... eg a Queen is worth 9 or 10 pawns, and a knight worth 3 pawns etc ... any thoughts on what values to assign arimaa pieces? I know that pieces change in value as more material in exchanged, but that is the same in chess, and also differen't positional characteristics suit different pieces in chess (eg a knight does better than a bishop in a closed position, but in an open position it's the other way around). I suppose I'm talking about an average value. I'm thinking that an E is worth more than 2 cats and a dog?? |

Title: Re: piece values Post by Fritzlein on Mar 7th, 2006, 11:53am If you had to use static piece values I would suggest R=1, C=1.5, D=2, H=3, M=5, E=10, even though the other thread points out a bunch of reasons it is a bad idea to use static piece values. Specifically, an elephant is worth way more than two cats and a dog in the opening, but in a endgame of ERR vs. DCCRR, the side with more pieces has a big advantage, all else being equal. I'd be interested to hear your ideas on the material in that other thread. |
