We must have gotten some favorable publicity somewhere.  For a long time the number of new players creating accounts has hovered between one and two per day.  But look at the wave of new accounts in the last eight days:

Month  Newcomers  Rate
-----  ---------  ----
April   .   . 37  1.23
May   .   .   51  1.65
June   .   .  35  1.17
JulyTo20th    29  1.45

Does anyone know of a specific cause?

Yes, indeed, I was thinking about the same last few days, definitely it could´t be a happenstance.

Anyway, it is great news for the arimaa community! :)

I contributed a bit; I evangelized it among a group of new gamer friends I met, and I think that resulted in between 3 and 6 new accounts.

I'm considering evangelizing quite a bit more, late next month.   The next  Strategicon (http://www.strategicon.net/) is coming up, and a bunch of my friends are thinking of renting a hotel room so they can game the whole four days.   I can get my admission free if I commit to one eight-hour day running a table of something; i think I'll set up 3-4 arimaa boards and have handouts on the game, the rules, and the AI challenge, and see if I can draw in some new blood.
