Title: Arimaa Top-Ten Power Ranking
Post by The_Jeh on Sep 26th, 2007, 11:07pm
In many sports blogs, people have fun giving their own rankings. In light of the recent debate about ratings, I undertook to construct my own top-ten ranking. I call it a "power" ranking because I derived the results as objectively as possible, according to a certain system. I constructed a large round-robin matrix out of recent matchups of likely contenders for the top ten and tried to derive from this an ordering of skill level. Also considered to a much lesser extent were regular and p8 ratings. The results below are the fruits of my labor.  Some names are current phenoms, and others are sleeping giants.  I apologize if you think your name ought to be on here. It wasn't easy, and I had to exclude some very good players. So without further ado, here is my formal ranking for Fall 2007:

#1 Karl Juhnke (Fritzlein)
#2 Jean Daligault (chessandgo)
#3 Toby Hudson (99of9)
#4 Frank Heinemann (Belbo)
#5 Till Wiechers (Robinson)
#6 Paul Mertens (PMertens)
#7 Ned Bent (RonWeasley)
#8 Greg Magne (Adanac)
#9 Omar Syed (omar)
#10 Kazushige Ito (Blue22)

Any questions or comments are welcome.

Good work!  Can you expand this to Top 25?

Also, I don't know if Belbo should be on there as he hasn't played in over 7 months.  There should be some factor for level of activity.

Well, top 25 would be way too hard, as there would be far too many matchups to consider.

I figure in seven months Belbo can't have weakened much. I'm sure when he starts playing again he'll be right back up there. What's learned in 938 games isn't soon forgotten.

Yes, you realize that for postal play you shouldn't even be in the top ten! ;-)  But maybe The_Jeh was aiming for a synthesis between postal and live...  Of course for live games you should be rated ahead of me.
