Title: Botbashers - Fastest Average Move Time Post by The_Jeh on Apr 20th, 2008, 4:37pm Trying to win at the greatest handicap may be the most fun method of botbashing, but there are other less controversial exploits that I do not remember having been tried yet. For example, who has defeated a bot with the fastest average time per move? I do not know how to check the games database for such information, but we could start to gather the data anecdotally. Just as an example, the human record against bot_Aamira2006P1 appears to be Arimabuff with an incredible .22 minutes per move average in game 74434. This appears to be completely non-controversial to me. I don't think connection quality is a major factor, and we can agree in advance that it is something that just has to be lived with. I know that handicap games are prized more than things such as victory in the fewest moves, and so forth, but I think this could be fun because it is completely new territory. |

Title: Re: Botbashers - Fastest Average Move Time Post by mistre on Apr 20th, 2008, 6:40pm You have good intentions, The_Jeh - but I don't care what you pick, nothing is immune to controversy as long as a certain someone continues to play here. Anyways, if you saw my solution in the other thread for the handicap records - nothing will satisfy this situation. If you take away the controversy, you are just left with "meaninglessness". I actually have a few ideas of my own for new botbash challenges, but I am waiting to see how this latest controversy plays out. |

Title: Re: Botbashers - Fastest Average Move Time Post by mistre on Apr 20th, 2008, 7:37pm It might come down to the user interface and clicking speed, at least for the easy bots. I personally have no interest in such a record, but that doesn't mean others don't. |

Title: Re: Botbashers - Fastest Average Move Time Post by IdahoEv on Apr 20th, 2008, 8:15pm I've had a lot of ideas as well (have a file of them still around from the '06 pass at running botbash contests), and I just realized one of them might be immune to this kind of gamesmanship. Because it can't be beaten through repeated, persistent play. The idea was that you create an alternate account with a specific name, say by appending _BB08 (botbash 2008) to your name, making me IdahoEv_BB08. Then with that account, you attempt to beat the entire bot ladder within a specific time frame - say by the end of August 2008. You must beat the ladder to qualify. Then, your score is the total number of moves you have made, in any game, with that account. The lowest score wins. You could practice with your regular account (or an alternate), but if you goof up and waste some turns in your competition account, you can't go back and try to do better, because doing so would increase the number of turns you have played. You get, in effect, only one shot at each bot to beat it in the fewest # of turns possible. |

Title: Re: Botbashers - Fastest Average Move Time Post by RonWeasley on Apr 21st, 2008, 9:03am This idea sounds appealing to me. Bot bashing specialists have an advantage, but that's how it should be. I would be very interested how well our good interactive players would score. But on that note, bot bashing is a different kind of play. Good interactive players who are not good bot bashers probably won't choose to participate. It depends on how seriously we take this. I'm a lousy bot basher, but this looks like fun and if I can make the time, I might enjoy people laughing at my result. I can't promise not to imitate other people's successful strategies. |

Title: Re: Botbashers - Fastest Average Move Time Post by The_Jeh on Apr 23rd, 2008, 3:09pm Just out of curiosity, I went through as much of the record as I could (back as far as game 65488) of the highest rated blitz bot, Bomb2005blitz, to see who has the record fastest average move time. The record appears to be .16m, achieved by 6sense in game 68017. I could find no game in which this record was matched. Interestingly, I could find only four instances of .17m, all performed by 6sense. I don't know how 6sense can move so fast against Bomb and still win, unless maybe he has a sixth sense... |
