On the second link it says, "This item is a preorder [more info], expected availability: September 2009. " September? I was hoping for August at the latest. :'( |

Title: Re: Arimaa sets are released! Post by nycavri on Aug 14th, 2009, 11:31am Well, my ThoughtHammer order - which was only waiting for Arimaa - has finally shipped! So at least one online retailer physically has them in stock . . . I'm interested to know if Z-Man has managed to crack any of the Big Box stores with Arimaa - Target, Walmart, TrU, etc. |

Thrilling news, thanks Avri! I see that ThoughtHammer now lists Arimaa as "in stock". Yay! I also see TH's list of bestsellers: 01. FITS 02. Ingenious 03. Arimaa 04. Blokus 05. Cornerstone 06. Cosmic Cows (Second Edition) 07. Hive (Third Edition) 08. Hive - The Mosquito Expansion 09. Qwirkle 10. TZAAR I wonder what time period this covers, and how many units of Arimaa it represents. [EDIT] I see now that Arimaa is not on ThoughtHammer's list of overall bestsellers. Apparently the list above is from abstract strategy games only. That's a sneaky marketing tactic to make people think that the game they are interested in buying is more popular than it actually is. [/EDIT] Quote:
Surely not yet. First Arimaa would have to be enough of a fad to get into Borders and such like. Settlers of Catan has sold over a million, and it still isn't stocked in Target. Arimaa, meanwhile, only had ten thousand copies in its initial print run. I think Arimaa has tremendous upside potential, but for now it is just potential. We need to get some good reviews, win some awards, get the buzz as "the next chess", or "a better chess than chess", or something really positive. People have to try it and like it, clubs have to form, there need to be live tournaments and more books. The big retailers are reactive, not proactive, so the phenomenon must already be happening before they will buy into it. |

Title: Re: Arimaa sets are released! Post by nycavri on Aug 16th, 2009, 5:35am FedEx tracking lists a delivery date for my order of 8/19. Expect a BGG review shortly thereafter . . . I don't exactly recall what else was in the order and, at least right now, I don't really care! |

Title: Re: Arimaa sets are released! Post by Fritzlein on Aug 18th, 2009, 2:22pm My father just bought a set at the Wichita HobbyTown, so that makes him the first verified owner by one day. ;) I'll get around to ordering mine presently. |

Title: Re: Arimaa sets are released! Post by omar on Aug 19th, 2009, 6:08pm Awesome, I just called the Game Chest store at the local mall and they said it is in stock. Looks like the sets are out there now. I just hope some of the buyers come and play online also. I just checked thought hammer and it's moved up to #1 in the abstract games category. |

Yes, and as the #1 abstract strategy game, Arimaa is still the #84 game overall. It's a good thing Thought Hammer doesn't sell toys as well, or Arimaa would be #928. On the other hand, even if abstract strategy games are a small niche market, it is great to be #1 in that niche! :) |

Title: Re: Arimaa sets are released! Post by mistre on Aug 22nd, 2009, 7:34pm FYI, Blokus is stocked in Target and other big-box stores. I could picture Arimaa among the abstract games in a year or so. :D |

Title: Re: Arimaa sets are released! Post by PhilomathBret on Oct 21st, 2009, 10:07pm I just got my set today. I'm excited to play the game with the real set as opposed to a chess set. I just wish they'd make a board and pieces about twice this size! It's tiny! |

I can tell you are a tournament chess player :-) You must be used to the large tournament chess sets. I think right now we are just lucky to have any set. If Arimaa develops a large enough community for off-line tournaments then I'm sure Zman would want to make the larger sets. |
