Title: Blind Arimaa
Post by Tuks on Apr 3rd, 2009, 1:26am
i think it might be interesting if we have forum matches, probably through messages rather than topics, Fritzlein's game brought this to my attention

Here's what i was thinking:
We have a match of two vs two
P1 vs P3
P2     P4
So P1 messages his moves through to P3 and P4
P4 makes sure its valid and put it in an actual game which is between P2 and P4, then P3 sends his return move (blindfolded) to P1/P2 and P2 checks whether its valid and put the move into the separate match. We continue this process until we have a winner

the vice-versa can be applied to a blind match between P2 vs P4 and P1 and P2 put in the moves and make sure everythings valid so we have two games going on at the same time

obviously we can easily have cheaters who just look up the match, unless omar can make it private?

it would also help with move notation, i know i have trouble whipping out moves using any of the notations

the online game would have to be unrated because the blind people cant actually use their own account

And even if they did, the point-and-click interface is unsuitable without tactile or audio feedback.

I would suggest just having two players and a referee in the chat room.  The players chat their moves to each other, and the referee enters them into a plan window or (my preference) plays them on a physical board to make sure they are legal.  Doing it this way loses the ratings (invalid anyway) and the clocks (undesirable anyway), while making it much easier to get a game organized.

Note that if the players never make illegal moves, the referee and the board are unnecessary.  There are some chess masters who are quite comfortable playing purely verbally.

aaa, but i cant imagine myself being able to do that consistently even after a hundred games, i was thinking more of a postal match kind of set up, but your idea would work if both players have enough time, i expect the game to be quite time consuming

Surely it would be even harder to remember a blindfold game postally??  I think the live chat idea sounds good.  (Not that I'm volunteering to participate, I don't think I'd have much chance.)

true, but you could always reference the whole listed game moves

interesting idea. I'd be willing to give it a try, but I expect it's completely undoable for us. Doing it at chess is relatively easy once you have enough experience, no need to be a grandmaster, competition players do it all the time during car trips ^^, but it is certainly a thousand time easier than at arimaa in the vacuum I think. And there is the issue that we essentially don't have that many games under our belt ...

I would expect the game to run for 5 to 10 (edit: on second thought I probably was too pessismistic here. Say, until the position gets messy in themidgame :)) moves at most. But looking forward to be proven wrong :)
