Title: Re: Everybody go rate Arimaa on boardgamegeek.com! Post by Adanac on Nov 2nd, 2009, 8:15am Arimaa is the only game that I've ever given a score of 10 on that website. I'm stingy with high ratings because according to their criteria below, awarding a 10 means that you have to have an insatiable desire to play a game, and you have to expect that will never change. I wouldn't want to have too many tens, otherwise I'd have no time to do anything for the rest of my life other than obsessively play board games! One 10 is enough for me :-* 10 - Outstanding. Always want to play and expect this will never change. 9 - Excellent game. Always want to play it. 8 - Very good game. I like to play. Probably I'll suggest it and will never turn down a game. 7 - Good game, usually willing to play. 6 - Ok game, some fun or challenge at least, will play sporadically if in the right mood. 5 - Average game, slightly boring, take it or leave it. 4 - Not so good, it doesn't get me but could be talked into it on occasion. 3 - Likely won't play this again although could be convinced. Bad. 2 - Extremely annoying game, won't play this ever again. 1 - Defies description of a game. You won't catch me dead playing this. Clearly broken. |

Title: Re: Everybody go rate Arimaa on boardgamegeek.com! Post by PhilomathBret on Nov 2nd, 2009, 8:31pm I haven't seen those. Seems like a silly criteria for categories 9 and 10. Any sane person that actually wants to follow those literally would never rate anything higher than 8. Always want to play it? What if you need sleep? Never expect it to change? Cummon! I want to be able to rate things 9 or 10 a reasonable number of times. I don't only want to judge a game based on how much I want to play it. I'm a chess teacher and I want to play chess more than is warranted by the quality of the game. Also, how many people I know that play the game can also influence how often I play the game, but I don't want to rate based on this. I rate based on my opinion of the quality of the game, which could be different from how often I want to play it. |

Title: Re: Everybody go rate Arimaa on boardgamegeek.com! Post by Fritzlein on Nov 3rd, 2009, 5:43am The criteria of BGG are much-discussed on BGG, and most people ignore them. Generally people just have their own relative scale, so that for everyone an "8" is a better game than a "7", but John's "8" is not equal to Joe's "8". I noticed, for example, that one BGG user said positive things about Arimaa, but only rated it a "5"! Another weird thing about BGG ratings is that there is a certain style of games that is most popular with that crowd. Multiplayer optimization games with a strong theme, no combat, and fairly complex rules get great ratings, because that the type of game they enjoy. Abstract strategy gamers are in the minority. It is weird for people to say that Arimaa is way better than chess while giving Arimaa a "7" because they just don't care for abstract strategy games in general. But that's OK, we Arimaa fanatics balance that out to some extent. The BGG people would consider anyone who responded to your post by giving Arimaa a "10" to boost its rating a shill. So to some extent we shills balance out the people who don't like the abstract genre at all. |

Title: Re: Everybody go rate Arimaa on boardgamegeek.com! Post by nycavri on Nov 3rd, 2009, 7:08pm As a long time BGGer, I've done my bit to talk up and bring attention to the AbStrat games I prefer. If you're going to open a BGG account and rate Arimaa, please rate other games you play as well. It makes the Arimaa vote meaningful (there is some sort of "shill busting" algorhythm at work which presumably discounts single ratings of 1 and 10) and even more importantly enhances the "accuracy" of the ratings as a whole. That said, it is "a truth universally acknowleged" that rank and ratings are always taken with a grain of salt, and that the most meaningful recommendations are from geekbuddy analasis and well written reviews. |
