Title: Face-to-face Arimaa etiquette
Post by megajester on Mar 25th, 2011, 4:48am
Has anybody raised this subject before? If so I will move my comments to the appropriate thread...

It just occurred to me that etiquette in face-to-face Arimaa matches may be a tad more complicated than in chess. For example:

If a player is moving the same piece in consecutive steps, can he move the piece directly to the destination or should he "touch" each step just like in the "Learn to play Arimaa" video? (Otherwise when flipping a piece you could have fun with uninitiates by simply "jumping" an opponents piece over one of your own.) Also what about when capturing? Should the piece be made to touch the trap?

In the absence of clocks, how does a player indicate that his turn is over after he has set up his pieces, and when he is declining to use all his steps? You can see examples of this in the video as well.

I know all of this is a bit hypothetical at the moment, but I thought I'd mention it before I forget.

If pieces can move directly to their destination, it makes it harder to see if it got frozen in any of the intermediate squares, or if its movement trapped a friendly piece which wouldn't get trapped if the movement was direct.

Some of these things have been considered before in this thread:

Wow, and much more comprehensively! Thanks for the heads up. I suppose there's no point in debating any further in this thread.

(I'll make a post in that thread about this one, just for the record.)
