Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by mistre on Mar 28th, 2011, 10:55am I got it - are we posting the solution here? |

Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by rbarreira on Mar 28th, 2011, 11:01am I think it would be better to post any solutions offsite (for example at pastebin) and link to them here. Here is what I think is the solution (briareus's analysis): http://pastebin.com/hXe4Pd2K |

Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by Fritzlein on Mar 28th, 2011, 11:02am I thought I got it, but then I found a defense. Please don't post the solution here. May I recommend posting it as a puzzle using the puzzle tool that Omar created? That allows the answer to be hidden from those who don't want to know, but available to those who want to verify their solution. |

Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by chessandgo on Mar 29th, 2011, 11:05am nice :) [having read sharp's solution obv ^^] I like the thread title, we're going to get more cute endgame problems it seems. |

Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by mistre on Mar 29th, 2011, 1:32pm Hmmm... that's not what I got. Isn't reversing Silver's first two moves a faster way to win? Or am I missing something obvious? |

Ok, I get it now. I didn't see that 3g. The other 3g I was looking at was a goal for Silver in 4. |

What do you mean by "reversing"? |

What I meant was that if silver played its first two moves in reverse order (the same two moves), then it would have a quicker goal. But I had the wrong 3g response from Gold for that to work. |

Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by Fritzlein on Mar 30th, 2011, 2:38pm Thanks, jdb, for a nice puzzle. I finally got around to solving it. Thanks all for holding off on posting the solution. It is trickier than it appears; the solution is critically affected by the presence of the traps squares. It is easy for me to forget that trap ownership is irrelevant; indeed it is Gold's home trap that prevents him from properly defending the winning move. To clarify for anyone who might be confused by mistre's posts: at first I also thought his move would win, but it loses (as opposed to winning more slowly than the true solution, as one might infer from his posts.) |

Title: Re: Endgame Puzzle 1 Post by Fritzlein on Mar 31st, 2011, 9:38am Wow, 4s is like a second key move. I totally didn't see that further trickeration would be necessary to bring home the win. Thanks, jdb, for adding the puzzle to the collection, along with the entire solution! |
