Resulting convention for hiding text in the forum while there is no [hide][/hide] tag ... use [ color= #AFC6DB ] or [ color= #F8F8F8 ] according to the parity of your post.
Change color to [ color=#DEE7EF ] inside the quote.

Example one

Quote color

And of course ... please don't delete the posts if anybody hided text in later posts.

The spaces in color switches has to be avoided. In this post I have used them just to show the content.

Actually, this is the best way because even if you use the right colour for a blue background, it will still be visible on the "most recent posts" page.

Copy and paste, delete all the "*" in the tags, and you're ready to go:
[*quote][*color=#DEE7EF]Insert text here[*/color][*/quote]

Here's what it'll look like:
