Title: Immortal Games Post by jsiehler on May 27th, 2011, 9:49am So of course chess has its fair share of so-called "immortal" games: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1001601 Is Arimaa mature enough yet that there are any games which could carry the title? |

Title: Re: Immortal Games Post by aaaa on May 27th, 2011, 10:42am Not sure, but when trying to come up with any game that mighty qualify, I thought of this one (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/gameroom/comments.cgi?gid=169686), surely insane enough to feature on any shortlist. |

Title: Re: Immortal Games Post by rbarreira on May 27th, 2011, 11:22am I can't find a single draw in the immortal chess games list... coincidence? |

Hmm thanks, but I recall that Tuks and I were both very unhappy with our play when this game ended. I'd say giving a Dog in 1 as I did in the middle game might automatically disqualify a game as "immortal" :) |

Title: Re: Immortal Games Post by Tuks on May 30th, 2011, 4:10pm how about this: http://arimaa.com/arimaa/gameroom/opengamewin.cgi?client=1&role=v&side=w&gameid=176530 and yes, i am trying to distract everyone from the one where i lose to c&g even after he graciously throws me material left right and center. |

In point of sustained drama, I think this game (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/games/jsShowGame.cgi?gid=132795&s=w) or this one (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/games/jsShowGame.cgi?gid=134847&s=w) would beat it out. On the other hand, since the immortal game of chess involved sacrificing a bunch of pieces to force checkmate, I quite like the idea of the immortal game of Arimaa involving material sacrifice to force goal. The camel sacrifice in the game Tuks suggested is grand, and I salute Tuks for making it and for bringing home the victory. Ideally, however, in addition to that central element of drama, one would not want too many niggling little errors on both sides before and after. (Plus I don't want those errors to be mine! ;)) My guess is that if any game of Arimaa that has been played so far would qualify as immortal, it would have to be a postal game, because live games seem always to have tactical mistakes that can been seen in hindsight fairly easily, whereas sometimes the errors in a postal game are too deep to be found on casual inspection. This game (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/games/jsShowGame.cgi?gid=57508&s=w) also involves a camel sacrifice for goal, and I don't recall any tactical blunders except perhaps just before the end. Not that I am doing myself any favors by suggesting another game I lost be remembered forever. :P More likely we aren't good enough at Arimaa so far to have our own immortal game. After all, chess was hundreds of years old before Anderssen vs Kieseritzky in 1851. What are the odds any of the games in this thread will still be remembered in 2020? |
