Title: Hoppy the Rabbit: A Cautionary Tale Post by Fritzlein on Jun 12th, 2011, 12:24pm Once there was an Arimaa rabbit who liked to jump. He jumped so high that his parents called him Hoppy. "But always remember," they told Hoppy, "there is no jumping in Arimaa. You may only run on the ground." Hoppy was not happy. "All the bigger animals can push us and freeze us," he said. "We can't push or freeze anyone. It would only be fair for us to jump." But his parents only said, "It's against the rules, Hoppy. If you hop off the Arimaa board, who knows where you will land?" One day Hoppy was blocked one step away from goal. He waited and waited for his bigger teammates to clear a path for him, but they were all away fighting to control the traps. "This is stupid," thought Hoppy. "I can see the edge of the board from here. There is no reason I shouldn't just jump over that cat." The longer he waited, the more he got hopping mad. At last Hoppy could not stand still any longer. He closed his eyes and jumped as high as he could. But he did not land back on the Arimaa board. He had so much hop saved up inside him that he jumped all the way to the moon. And to this very day, when the moon is full, you can see Hoppy sitting there, wishing he could come back down to play Arimaa again. |
