Title: What's the ideal 4-row setup? Post by Migi on Jan 31st, 2012, 6:42am Hey everyone, I think I've been playing Arimaa the wrong way. So far, I've only been doing the lone elephant attack, slowly playing the rabbit pulling game, and reacting whenever the bot makes a mistake. This works suprisingly well against many bots. But against some bots, I can only capture 2 rabbits, the rest of the rabbits are out of reach and the bot just doesn't make any mistakes I can react to. Then I usually have no idea what to do, so I do stupid things, still trying to make the lone elephant attack work, which fails horribly most of the time. I need to learn how to set up my own attack. Acting instead of only reacting. The game seems to be a lot more fun that way too. So I came up with a question, and I think it's quite interesting: If gold just set up his pieces in a 99of9 setup, and you as silver are allowed to set up your pieces on the last 4 rows (your half of the board), what would you do? I think this tool (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/notconv/old/boardtools.php?example=postoimg) could be useful here. |

Title: Re: What's the ideal 4-row setup? Post by Manuel on Jan 31st, 2012, 8:43am I would keep two or three rabbits on my back-row for panic goal defense, give both my traps a three-piece defense of cats, dogs, and rabbits, and put the rest of my pieces forward to attack and unfreeze each other. I am not completely sure where I would put my camel in this case, but surely not too close to the opposing elephant... |

Title: Re: What's the ideal 4-row setup? Post by Hippo on Jan 31st, 2012, 1:36pm I would make 99of9 on 56 rows except cats being on c7,f7. |

If I understand correctly, you mean this: http://arimaa.com/arimaa/notconv/old/boardimg.php?orient=n&size=300&imgtype=jpeg&ranks=/2c2c/rrrddrrr/rh1me1hr///RHCEMCHR/RRRDDRRR So you would put rabbits inside the traps? Is it with the plan of shifting them down the a-file and h-file later? |

Title: Re: What's the ideal 4-row setup? Post by Hippo on Jan 31st, 2012, 4:55pm Hmm the rabbits in trap are weird ... putting them to c5 f5 would be better. ... another try ... ef5 mc5 hbg5 dde5 ra56bdeg6h56 ccf7. It seems to me this setup will gain controll of away traps much more quickly. |
