Title: Move 31
Post by Fritzlein on May 20th, 2008, 3:13am
After Wednesday, I'll be traveling on vacation until the second week of June.  I don't know how much time or Internet access I will have while I'm on the road.  On this move it would not be good to delay the vote until I have weighed in.  :-)

I sent chessandgo a message in our owl game that he has less than 3 days remaining on his clock.  Perhaps other reminders are prudent at this time.  Feel free.

And chessandgo plays 31w Ha4e Hb4e Hc4n Hc5e.  Is it a weapon?  Or a target?

There is no immediate threat created by that horse...
But there is a possibility of freezing our horse if it attacks and leaving the golden on free in the middle of the board.

At the first glance I don't see any play-worthy answer.

Just to throw something out there to get things started,

31b hb5s Db3w hb4s XXX

The cat on c2 is threatened. This limits gold's choices, so it should be reasonble to analyze.

The gold horse's main objective is probably to get to our dog on g2, which would undoubtedly happen were it not for the fact that the horse's absence from the western scene would make it easier for us to generate counterplay there so as to release our elephant.

I like jdb's move. It is the logical continuation of our original swarming idea. For a fourth step, I recommend putting something on f7 - probably the rabbit. Or we could delay that and instead advance the rabbit to b6. Perhaps that would be more prudent.

Yes, I think that our best answer is (already proposed):

31b hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s

Title: Re: Move 31

Yes.  jdb has the logical continuation for silver.  Gold can't immediately take the h hostage because the r on c3, or the r on b7, can free it while the e can attack the central H.  From there we play it like a camel hostage.  If gold tries to take our h, silver wins the race by taking the H and returning to defend.

I looked at whether the fourth step should be rb7s to help the h on b3 escape, but it isn't needed.  rb7s would continue the swarm, but I think rf8s protects the r on g3 if we are pushing the central H to the f3 trap.

Also, the H has only three steps since the E must then go to c4.  If the H goes back to the west side, we can continue the swarm or consider pushing the cat back with our g2 dog.  Our advanced rabbit makes that hard to defend now.  With only three steps, the H can't get away from our e.

So I prefer hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s over hb5s Db3w hb4s rb7s.

I've found nothing better than hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s...
Move via consensus?

Three of us have stated a preference.  If we get 7, I will make the move.  Otherwise if there is no significant discussion, we will vote Monday.

This is a mob, so feel free to object and slow it down.

How does silver reply in this line?

31b hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s
32b Hd5e He5s De3s De2w

How about ed3e He4n ee3n rb7s?

If the gold E goes after the h on b6, it evades while we trap the H.  Instead, I'd expect the E to help save the H, leaving the silver h guarding the open frame of the r on c3.  We then swarm it with our h being the biggest piece and the swarm frees it.

I concur with 31b hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s.

Does anyone else think that Chessandgo's move was a strategic blunder?  I don't see what he was trying to gain from that move and all future lines seem to favor us now.  But I have been wrong before and he is sneaky, so maybe he has a trick I am just not seeing...

One reason it might be a blunder is that he didn't make a move until his reserve was really low - maybe he couldn't find a good move.

If it does turn out to be a defining move of the game, we will have to reconsider our dog charge as being beneficial as that might be one of the reasons that chessandgo decided to move his Horse east.

I'm not sure who is ahead now. After the horses are exchanged, silver can go after the g3 cat?

33b He5n ee4n rb6s hb5w

This looks to me like we capture his horse for a horse hostage. But I'm probably missing something.

[Edit: and I'm not seeing any other better responses for chessandgo either so I'm in support of 31b hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s as well.]

I was also thinking that this was what RonWeasley meant with If the gold E goes after the h on b6, it evades while we trap the H. But this is only posible when Gold plays 33w Ed4w Ec4w Eb4e hb3n rc3x, not when he plays 33w Ed4w Ec4w Eb4n hb3n rc3x as jdb suggested.

As Gold I think I would be happy with this line.

Any other suggestions after  31b hb5s Db3w hb4s rf8s  32w Hd5e He5s De3s De2w  ?
I just don't feel like giving up our rabbit at c3 now.

Yes.  This is what I meant because I didn't see the Eb4n step, which is better.  I like Fritz's continuation and I thought the second variation looked stronger for gold until I saw 33b ee3n Hf4n ee4e rb7s, which trades HC for hr and gives silver an empty east side.

I notice Fritzlein's post is a bit terse.  I hope that's not because of my "loudest" comment.  That was supposed to be an entertaining observation rather than a suggested change in behavior.  Sorry if I said it the wrong way.  If anything, I would prefer Fritzlein would stay the same and the rest of TheMob get noisier, as I am trying to do.

I think I see 8 of us in favor of our move.  If there are no objections, I will move Sunday.  That allows time for objections.

No, no, it's just that I'm sneaking Arimaa between family functions.  I don't even know whether I like the consensus move or not, so I didn't say anything.  No time! :)

Well, no objections.  That means everybody agrees, right?  I'm making the move.
