Title: Move 32
Post by mistre on May 30th, 2008, 9:54am
Chessandgo plays:

32w Hd5e He5e Hf5s Hf4s

Obvious countermove is to capture the cat:

32b ed3s rc3e Cc2n Cc3x ed2w

Chessandgo will probably respond with:

33w Cg3e Hf3e rd3w Ed4s

At that point, we will need to see if we have a forced goal, or if we should save our dog.  Either way, we should be in good shape.

I support cat capture.

Could someone please post an illustrative line for play after the cat capture. I was looking at the position and things didn't go to well for silver. I hope its just blindness on my part.  :)

He's definitely not going to force our rabbit onto the trap. That would be weak and uncharacteristic of him, I think. On the other hand, I don't know what he can do. If he takes our rabbit on the next move, we just help ourselves to the buffet at c3. Perhaps 33w De3s rd3e Ed4s ????. It may very well be the case that the cat capture was an oversight by him, because it seems to confer an advantage on us.

On the other hand, let's be aware that after he captures our rabbit, his horse will be near our northeast side, while our horse and elephant are all the way in the southwest. He might be able to forcibly take our dog hostage, which could be enough compensation for him.

But, I'm going to support the cat capture for the time being.

32b ed3s rc3e Cc2n Cc3x ed2w
33w rd3w Ed4s Rf2w Hf3s

33b dd7s dd6w dc6s dc5s
34w Hf2s dg2w df2n df3x Hf1n
34b Rc1e ec2s rc3s dc4s

So on 34w the dog is safe.

The_Jeh, now that I look at it more, I believe 33w De3s rd3e Ed4s Rh1n  is a much stronger move and probably his best move.  Rh1n will block our Dog's escape route, so is the likely 4th step.

I am switching back to thinking our advanced Dog is a liability rather than an advantage.  I no longer think that the cat capture is a unanimous best move.  We might also consider retreating the dog or moving a piece to c4.

Here's some food for thought, courtesy of your local newbie. ;)

1)
Retreat dog. Leaves position rather boring.
32b dg2e dh2n dh3n dh4n

2)
Capture cat
32b ed3s rc3e Cc2n Cc3x ed2w
mistre's response
33w De3s rd3e Ed4s Rh1n
Three of our pieces are in danger (hb3, re3 and dg2) and our goal threat seems to have subsided. I think the best we can hope for is to lose the advanced rabit, save our dog and come out of the deal up a cat for a rabbit.

Perhaps we retreat our horse, taking his dog with us:
33b Da3n hb3w Da4n ha3n
He responds by capturing our rabbit
34w Cg3e Hf3e re3e rf3x Ed3e
We offer a dog trade
Da5e ha4n Db5n ha5e
Whether he accepts the trade or moves his elephant to protect his dog, we seem to be in an ok position and are up a cat

3)
Capture cat
32b ed3s rc3e Cc2n Cc3x ed2w
mistre's response (as in previous variation)
33w De3s rd3e Ed4s Rh1n
Retreat our horse by itself:
33b hb3n hb4n hb5n ec2e
He captures our rabbit
34w Cg3e Hf3e re3e rf3x Ed3e
We protect our dog
34b De2s ed2e Rf2n ee2e
We've saved the dog, but our elephant is in a bad position.

In my newbie opinion #2 looks best.

I agree that the best response to our cat capture is  33w De3s rd3e Ed4s Rh1n.  Every time I try to threaten the dog on a3, gold gets his E on the silver horse and we get threats to our dog on f3 and horse on c3.  In warren's #2, gold's next move is E->c5 and he has control of our horse.  Other attempts to steal the dog fail for me.

In effect, gold gives up a cat to get a double attack against the silver horse and dog.  This is the theme behind gold's current strategy.

In warren's #3, the silver horse retreats and I am able to continue with the silver e to get play around f3 threatening to pry out a cat or horse.  If gold goes after our horse near c6, I am able to evade.  So we get a somewhat equal position except that our dog around f3 is helping instead of being a hostage.

So I like the cat capture.  I expect to lose the forward silver rabbit, and I want to retreat the b3 horse.

I looked at swarms against f3 and c3 and nothing looks good, but I'm not usually good at swarms.

32b ed3s rc3e Cc2n Cc3x ed2w
33w De3s rd3e Ed4s Rh1n
33b Da3n hb3w Da4n ha3n
34w Cg3e Hf3e re3e rf3x Ed3e

The last step on 34w could be something else.

34b rb7s rb6s Da5n ha4n

Silver's horse is protected by the b5 rabbit. Gold only has 4 rabbits blocking the goal attack on the a file.

If  34w Cg3e Hf3e re3e rf3x Ed3n, 34b rb7s rb6s Da5n ha4n is met with 35w Ed4n Ed5w rb5n Ec5w  and the h is caught.  This sets up a trade of 2 gold rabbits for the silver dog, which doesn't look that good to me, but others may see opportunity there.

This disagreement aside, most of us seem to like the cat capture right now.  Let's hear it if you agree, or let's hear an alternative if you don't.  If we get 7 yeas and no neighs, I'll take the cat.

Looks like there are enough decent choices after capturing the cat. Might as well take it.

Like every Gary Larson dog, I support putting the cat in the drier ;) . Mistre's last post expressed reservations with felinicide, so I'm curious if he still has reservations in light of the discussion since then.

I can't find any move better than cat capture.  So let's kill the kitty.

32b ed3s rc3e Cc2n Cc3x ed2w
33w De3s rd3e Ed4s Rh1n
33b Da3n hb3w Da4n ha3n
34w Cg3e Hf3e re3e rf3x Ed3n

Then - 34b Da5n ha4n ha5e hb5n

Either we will trade dogs, or both have dog hostages. Either way, we are still up a cat overall.

I'm fine with the cat capture as well.

Well, no objections and we got five confirmations and UT and a_m didn't withdraw theirs, so I'm gonna call that a consensus.  The cat falls.  Fritzlein is going to freak when he comes back.
