Post by RonWeasley on Oct 10th, 2008, 8:04am
chessandgo responds swiftly with a running rabbit:

I don't see how we can do better than choice 1.

I also chose choice 1.  Here's how it turned out:

42s Hg4n ef4e rf5s rc8w
43g Ee3n rf4n Ee4e Ra5n
43s cd6s re5s cd5e re4s
44g Ef4w re3w Ee4s Rg1w
44s rf5s rf4s rf3s ce5w
45g Ee3s Ee2w rf2w Rf1w
45s dg3s Ch3w Cg3w Cf3x dg2n
46g Rh1n Db6n cc7s cc6x Db7e
46s rh4s dg3s rb5s rb4s
47g Dc7e Ra6n Ra7e Rb7e
47s rb3e rd3e rc3x re2e rf2s

As usual, this may not be the best line, but it illustrates some possibilities.

I like it too. We have then two goal threats and gold horse and cat under our control. I'm for this move.

OpFor also immediately finds and then sticks with this move from the initial 4 step search all the way through 16.

That is also my first impulse, but let's not be too hasty, there is time on the clock, and the main thing is to make sure we win!

I analyzed 2 other options, appears to be not better than choice1.

r west:
42s rc8w re5w rd5w rc5s

r west b5 adv:
42s rc8w re5w rd5w rb5s

So far, Gnobot does the same, currently up to 13 steps (30 minutes).  Not sure I'll make 16 on the laptop.

[edit: at 14 ply it changes to rc8w re5w rf5w rd5w

  14    5426.5      76.5   -1326  c8-b8 e5-d5 f5-e5 d5-c5 b5-b4 b6-b5 b4-c4 b5-b4 f4-f3 g4-f4 f4-f5 f3-f4 h1-h2 c4-c3 b4-c4

but I think this is mostly motivated by ensuring that Jean cannot even create a goal threat]

I can't find anything wrong with this move, and I can't find anything else that looks nearly as strong.  I don't necessarily see a forced goal, but it seems that if chesssandgo defends goal, we win his horse for free.  I am not averse to moving quickly.

I'm happy with the consensus move. He'll be too busy countering our barrage of goal threats to spare the many steps needed to make his attack in the northwest a serious threat.

Ron, this is a very good line and Camelback's proposal rules supreme, but there's no point in being so materialistic after 45g Ee3s Ee2w rf2w Rf1w - instead of capturing, we can perform e->e3 and d->g2 (45s: dg3s eg4w ef4w ee4s). A classic win-win situation: Gold H and C win their freedom as they become unfrozen - and we win the game ;).

Taking a look at opfor's response to camelback's proposal the best it comes up with is:

depth 19
time 34068
nodes 3836024872
qnodes 425040186
losing_moves 6536
score -400
pv Ee3n Rg1w rf4n Ee4e b Hg5n eg4n dg3s re5s w rf5n rf6x Ef4n Ef5s Rh1n b Hg6w Hf6x eg5n Rh2s dg2e
