I initially signed up for the Rockies, but they have a lot of people over there already.

Since I am of European descent and have been to Europe in the past year, that should be enough to throw my budding skills in with team Europa, yes?

Dear Europa Members

FRIENDLY MATCH: We are planning to have friendly matches on the week of the 14-20 December. We need only a 3 player roster from each of the teams, so please reply here to let us know if you think you will be able to play a game on that week, and at what times.

TEAM CAPTAIN: We had hoped to have a captain for you by now, but unfortunately the candidates selected have taken a long time to respond.

All a Team Captain basically does is encourage new players to join the club, rally the team, and determine who will play on what table in matches. If you think you would like the task of Team Captain, please message me or reply here. If more than one person applies the highest rated applicant will be selected.

Thank you.

I'm in for a friendly match that week.

Didn't I see somewhere some sort of grid where you could indicate your time preference for a game?  Does that apply here?  If not, I could type everything out, but very generally any time during the day and on a weekday is good.

Looks like I'm the only one so far!  Do I get to be team captain?   ;D

I found the scheduler and filled it out despite the fact that it left out some prime Monday-Wednesday slots for me.  I'll change it if that option becomes available.

Hi, I am interested to join.
And you get my vote for team captain, azgreg.

I don't think they'll become available. Not the whole week is used so there is some time between 2 rounds to organize things.
I have set my preferences.

In the absence of other players, I'll put woh on board 1 and me on board 2.  Hopefully someone else will put their name in, in which case we'll revisit.

Hello all!  Team captain AZGreg here!

After quite a long wait, it appears that the World League will breathe at last!

As part of the premilinaries, the league needs to decide how many games each team will play every other week.

If you're already a Team Europa member (froody, Hippo, Nevermind, PMertens, Tuks, woh), I'll send you a message with the info below, but if you're joining us afterwards, I need to your answers to the questions below as soon as possible.

-------------------------

The League will field some number of boards every other week.  To help decide how many boards we can cover, I need to know your estimated availability to play one game ever 2 weeks.   For example, if you say 75%, that means you believe you could play 3 games in 2 months.  Keep in mind that your actual availability can change as we go; you need only send me a message telling me to put you in or keep you out and I’ll do so.

95%  -  Put me in, coach! I’m ready to play!
75%  -  I’m reliable, but sometimes real life gets in my way.
50% -  I’m there for you, but don’t push me.
25% - I have small children, or my time is not mine to spend.  I’ll let you know.
5% - I fear commitment, so don’t count on me. I will bask in our team’s reflected glory, though.

Once we start playing, I’ll need some way to decide who is playing which board.  I could simply use your Arimaa rating, but for some (like me) that might be an overstatement.  What I’d like to know is, on a scale from Board 1 (top class player) to Board 5 (beginner to intermediate, wanting to improve), which board do you think you want?

*edited to show that games are every 2 weeks, not weekly*

Europa rocks obviously :)

Ok, so captain, I'm like 50-75%. You can push me, but life gets in the way, or the other way around.

Team Europa, we got ourselves a ringer!

Thanks c&g!  We cannot be stopped!

Title: Re: Europa Clubhouse
Post by chessandgo on Mar 23rd, 2010, 12:23pm
what does ringer mean? I find only "clone" in my dictionary, but I guess you're not talking of my physical appearance here :)

Title: Re: Europa Clubhouse
Post by azgreg on Mar 23rd, 2010, 12:53pm
Sorry, what I mean by "ringer" is like when you're organizing a friendly game of darts or football or something, and one of the guys you "just happen to know" turns out (surprise!) to be the World Champion!   ;D

Title: Re: Europa Clubhouse
Post by chessandgo on Mar 24th, 2010, 11:56am
ok. I still don't understand where ringer comes from in this sense (someone who runs around a ring?). I read that the players in the Ring of Fire team call themselves Ringers, so in this sense you don't have a ringer, you have yet another European :)

I think the meaning of "unexpectedly good player" derives from the meaning "clone".  That is to say, suppose you and I are scheduled to play a game against each other, but instead of showing up to play myself, I send in someone who looks just like me but plays better.  Then you suspect that you are playing a ringer.

However, it has come to mean any player who is so strong that it is cheating.  For example, there was a women's baseball team, the Silver Bullets, went around playing other amateur men's baseball teams, but the men really, really didn't want to lose to women, so they would bring in a professional pitcher.  Even if the pitcher didn't look like anyone who was regularly on the team, he still shouldn't be there, so we would call him a ringer.

I'm pretty new to the game, but willing to fight for Europe if I'm of any use. I just managed to climb the bot ladder a week or so ago; finally beat Bomb 2005Fast after 69 losses so my rating may be a bit too low. I think I got a life, so 75 % sounds right for me.

As long as you're willing to fight for Europe, that's all that matters to us!  It's a long war, and we'll need as many people as we can get!

OK, since my last long note, the situation has become clearer, which you may have read in the other League threads.

The first round of games will be the week of April 19, the next May 3, and every alternate week after that.  For each match, I need to submit our roster of players the week before.  For now, it appears there will be three boards each game, but that could increase later.

What I need to know between now and April 12 is if you are available to play a game in that first round starting the 19th.  Don't worry if it seems like we already have enough players, we can always use backups!  Please PM me with that information, as we don't want to give away anything to the spies on the other teams!   :)

Game on!
Greg

If interest picks up we might make it four or five tables per match, but once the league starts the number of tables must remain constant throughout. Otherwise the number of available league points at each match will constantly fluctuate. FYI :)

If you're not closely following the League Feedback board (and why should you be?) you may not know that each team will have a "WHR rating point" budget to use for the season.  (Each player's WHR rating is based on games vs. other humans only).  Basically, each team's average rating on all boards for the entire season must work out to some pre-set number (probably around 1900).  That means that every time we play chessandgo (WHR 2743) we'll need to offset it by playing two people fairly low-rated (1478) in order to keep our average down around 1900.  The budget is for the whole season, so we can overspend one week as long as we make it up over the course of all six weeks.

That means players with lower ratings are suddenly quite valuable!  So welcome to the team, Heyckie!   :)

It also means that there is a large incentive for the captains recruit beginning to intermediate players onto the team and get them into their matches.  So if you know of someone who is not sure about joining because of their low rating, please get them to sign up and help out their favorite team!

Thanks!
Greg

The first match is just around the corner!  At this point, I'd really like everyone who's available to play the week of April 19 to please let me know as quickly as possible.  I will be on holiday starting April 15, returning after the match is well underway, so I'd like to get our lineup finalized before then.   :)

Since I’ll be on vacation starting tomorrow, I need to submit our roster a bit early.  I’ve already messaged the three that will be taking on the Rockies for us, so they know who they are.

Because anyone can read this board, I’m not at liberty to speak freely, but I have some ideas around our long-term team strategy that I’d like to discuss, and I want to hear your ideas, too.  Megajester is offering to help set up Team Clubhouse Wikis that only members will be able to enter, where we can discuss games, strategy, and generally offer team support.

Go Team Europa!

All of the above is correct except for the "that only members will be able to enter" bit. I have no idea how that would be possible. My idea was simply to open a special page for each club on the wiki to function as an official club website. FYI :)

Well done to us in Round 1!  Our wins may have been costly, but we're in a tie for first nonetheless!

In an attempt to build some team unity and create a place for us to easily discuss team matters in private, I've created a modest Team Europa website.  To be honest, it ain't great yet, but I'm hoping you guys can help me make it so.

If you send me your e-mail address, I'll invite you to the site.

Hi there! Hi Captain!
If you need one more player I'm ready about 66% when I fight back my phobia of clocks and calendars :)
My rating is probably overestimated due to the rating drift that I imagine happened during the two years I didn't play.
But I'll do my best!

Title: Re: Europa Clubhouse
Post by azgreg on May 26th, 2010, 3:38pm
All right, Team Europa.  You might think that with one win in the last six games, last place in the standings, and most ratings points spent, that we're just beaten down and ready to give up.  Some of you may say that this league is over for us.  To which I say:

We have them EXACTLY where we want them!

An extra tick of the clock here, a missed move there, and throw in a server crash or two, and we're in first place right now.  We're so close to the top, we might as well be tied for the lead.  Sure we've got some ground to make up, but this is the kind of situation that requires an absolutely futile and stupid gesture be done on someone's part.

And we're just the guys to do it.

So if you're ready to show the league that there's a reason that Europe has never lost a war, let me know that you're ready to play, and let's just win this whole d**n thing.

Who's with me?!?

I would just like to point out that it is still possible for Europa to take a clear first place in the league, without even relying on a tiebreaker.  We're playing the #1 team, which means when we sweep them, all four teams could be within 3 points of each other going into the final week.

Arimaa is all about fighting it out until the bitter end, because you just never know what'll happen, so why should the World League be any different?

Also, if nobody volunteers and we have to have a captain of some sort, I can take it. But I'm currently away on Chile, with shaky internet connection prospects, so I'll be hugely relieved as soon as a real captain steps up for this Second Season.

I am prepared to play in the 2nd season, but I don't want to be a captain:). So I suppose c&g is captain so far and I am sending message to him. But if leo (or anybody else) has no problem with being captain, I would be OK with it as well.

Thanks for pointing out the season start.

Ok, thanks for your availability message Hippo. I guess the league hasn't started yet, so I don't expect that there will be a round as early as next week.[EDIT: wrong, it has, so there will]

I should be available for a game as well ... but please oh captain my captain send me a mail because I do not check this forum everyday ;)

Duly noted :)

As far as I understand, Round 1 will actually be played next week. We're crossing the ocean for this 1st Round to slaughter the Atlantics on their homefield.

Send me a PM to let me know whether you can play next week!

Ok, we're still a player short for next week. Let's say we double the match primes for this first match :)

Doh, I missed the start of Season 2. And I'm glad Jean is the captain and I'm not, for I'm mathematically challenged and time challenged, meaning I would squander the points, mismatch everybody and mess with time zones.
But I can bring in the Amazing Cheerleading Girls' Pyramid on the back of an elephant with a rabbit on the top, sell the hot dogs and install the loud speakers on the poles and all that.

Glad I can help :] Here are the cheerleaders:

Yes, it's Rimbit on the top. OK, it's a very rough sketch but I hope it conveys some energy. If there were more girls playing Arimaa I'd draw a few cheerleading guys too.

Awesome Leo, just awesome! I guess players from other teams don't read our forum, I reckon you should post this picture in a thread read by everyone.

And we're good for round 1, I submitted our roster. Thank you players for stepping in, good luck and enjoy! For those who are not playing this round, send me a PM when you know whether you can play Round 2.

Apparently some read other clubhouses' threads, see Fritz's funny post in the Rockies thread :)
But I'm posting another drawing in a common thread.

GO EUROPA THIS FIRST ROUND WILL BE MORE THAN A WARMING, IT MUST BE RED HOT AND SPARKING!!!

Unless Europa is playing the Rockies, in which case you should definitely play just for the opportunity to school me yet again.  :)

Hahaha, Super-Dupont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superdupont) :D A funny thing is that "Oui nidiou" actually meant something in some regional French.

I'm somewhat away from the internet and Arimaa these days, but I want to say Yahoooo to the team for Round 1, and I look forward to amazing results in the next round.

Ok, we got a problem. We still have no player available for next week's round. I won't be able to play either due to a Chile-France travel. So we're desperately looking for players! Please step forward folks! :)

Also, I won't be here from saturday to monday, so I won't be able to send our roster to megajester. Can someone else act as a temporay captain for this round?

Jean

We're still one player short.

Woh will be the captain for this round (thanks Hervé !). If you can play next week, please send a PM to woh, not to me.

Good luck for the players!

I hope we found a third player?

Work with our budget is excellent :) ... ok seems it has nothing to do with strategy :). We could spent much more budget in the remaining rounds and our position is not bad so far. I am aware we will not win 3 matches now, but we have chances for 2 wins.
So go on! Good luck!

Yeeheee, we win 2-1 against the Rockies' heavy artillery. Congrats to the players! And I read http://arimaa.com/arimaa/gameroom/comments.cgi?gid=152845 that woh waited more than an hour for Fritzl to show up, that's defenitely European sportsmanship at its best :)

Hervé, would you want to be captain of Team Europa for good?

Also we have a game against the Ringers next week, send me a PM to tell me whether you're available!

Thanks all payers that represented Europa. Especially the last round performance was amazing and the budget spent ... it looks like using deep startegical planning to use our badget this way.

Actually if I understand it well it was several times very difficult to fill all three seets so we vere just lucky enough :). So thanks once more to those who were fighting for us.

Yeah, it's cool to finish on a 3-0 :) Thanks and congrats to all. Indeed Hippo, we've basically always have only 3 players available as far as I'm aware. If there is a Sequel of the Sequel, we're going to need some fresh blood!

Congratulations to Heyckie and chessandgo for a great performance in the last round. And thanks for being available to play on the team!

The deep startegical planning to use our budget this way was pure luck indeed. As chessandgo pointed out, never were more than 3 players available.

And thanks to megajester and Fritzlein for running this competition!

Hi clojure, welcome to Team Europa!

The current round was the last of this competition and as far as I know at this moment no new one is planned. I guess next league will be held after the WC 2011. So it might take while before you get some action.

EDIT: You should also register at http://arimaa.com/arimaa/events/reg.cgi?e=2010worldleague
