Hi, Team.  If the AWL gets started the week of July 4 as megajester now suggests (with most games probably on the weekend of July 9-10), I will be on vacation and unable to participate.  Do we have at least three volunteers who can play?  The composition doesn't matter so much at this stage, since any deficit or surplus can be smoothed out later, but forfeits are deadly.

Greeting Rockies!  Like Fritz, I'll also be on vacation the week of July 4th, as well as the previous week.  If we do start then, is anyone available to be acting captain? What needs to be done is to put together a roster of three volunteers and send it to megajester.

Also, new members are MOST WELCOME!!!

Has the format officially changed to team games this year?  I'm not too eager to play a live team game again after last year's online festival.  Both team games I participated in ended by the total game time, which isn't much fun.  I don't think the quality of play was that great either; I think it just takes too much time to verbally communicate and reach a consensus.

I'm available to play the week of July 4 if the format is still one-on-one, but if the format has changed to live team games then I don't think I'll participate this season.

It's still one-on-one matches.  Thanks for volunteering to play the opening week!

Greetings Team!

The 2011 season is underway!  We'll be playing the Ring of Fire next week.

I'll be sending private messages through this forum to solicit volunteers.  If you're interested in playing, please send me a private message before next Monday, August 8.  (You can use the e-mail address CPBovee@charter.net as an alternate way to reach me.)

As before, new members are most welcome!  If you're interested in joining our team, please post in this thread.  Since we're again using rating budgets, players at all levels are needed.

I just want to add emphasis that new players (or old team members who haven't expressed interest yet) are greatly needed!  So far we just have three players who have recently expressed interest in participating:

Fritzlein
Hirocon
ChrisB

Especially needed are low-rated or inexperienced players.  It looks like our first round opponent, the Ring of Fire, is also recruiting inexperienced players.  So, any  player new to arimaa who joins us will have a good chance of being paired with a player of similar ability next week.

Knak has been added to the list at the top of this thread, and the official ratings list on the wiki.

Welcome knak!  It's great to have you on the team!

If you're available to play in Round 1, please let me know by private message or at CPBovee@charter.net.

The game times for Round 1 are from Wednesday evening, August 10, through late-afternoon Sunday, August 14, at a time most convenient for both you and your opponent, as determined by an automated scheduler.

Well, Fritz makes a pretty compelling argument about getting more playing time here than on the Atlantics, so I'm here to offer my services. If you guys want me, I'd be happy to join. Although I am closer to the Atlantic than the Rockies... But that's beside the point. Let me know.

Oh yes, we definitely could use more players.  You are in. Welcome to the Rockies, Braveheart!

For sure we can use you, Braveheart.  This round knak played to balance me out, and we appear to be over budget anyway.  Iirc, last season our team took a budget penalty because there was no alternative to my playing four times.  It will definitely help to have another volunteer to go to.

I'll do what I can, although I should warn you all I'm not the best arimaa player... Anyway, how do we determine who is playing each round, and who manages our budget??

I'll send out personal messages soliciting volunteers to all team members during the week preceding each round.

To send these messages, I've been using the personal message feature of this forum.  The messages can be accessed by clicking on "Hey, USERNAME, you have X messages" at the top of this page.  To volunteer you can just send me a personal message back or contact me at CPBovee@charter.net.

I'm the one who manages the budget, but input from teammates is welcome.

Hope you'll be able to play in some of the rounds.  Players are paired based on their rating, so chances are good that the games will be pretty evenly matched.

I may not be able to play in any matches for a little while. :( I just moved into a new apartment, and until I get reliable internet access I won't be of much use... Sorry guys.

Title: Re: -- ROCKIES --

No problem; by the time you get a solid Internet connection we'll be in such a big budget hole that you will get to play every round!  :)

Hi Team,

Just letting you know we can still use more volunteers for Round 3, which starts next Wednesday (Sept. 7).  If you're available, let me know by personal message or at CPBovee@charter.net.

Again, new members are most welcome!  There's still plenty of time to join and get on the roster for Round 3.

Well, we could still use at least one more volunteer.  If you would like to get in on the excitement, please let me know by early afternoon Monday CST (Monday evening GMT).  Thanks!

Hi.

Just letting people know that it's still not too late to join the Rockies.  We still have three more rounds and could use more players at all levels, especially those with little experience.  So, if you're intrigued about getting in on some exciting live action, come on in!

Title: Re: -- ROCKIES --
Post by Fritzlein on Oct 8th, 2011, 10:12pm
For the record, the Rockies are not going over budget by choice.  I would never have played three rounds if we had had any alternatives.  ChrisB is fielding the three lowest-rated volunteers every single round, whenever he has a choice, which he usually doesn't.  We are already doomed to take a budget penalty, but in order to keep that penalty to a minimum, let me be perfectly clear:

If you are a new player, and you want to be absolutely guaranteed to play next round (i.e. Round 6, the final round) JOIN THE ROCKIES!

(geography is no obstacle)

I would like to join the Rockies. Living in Ohio I don't feel very Atlantic, and my wife and I have really enjoyed our two trips to Colorado, so Rockies it is!

As far as I can tell, the final round has not been scheduled... so, maybe my 1362 rating can help?  ???

Go Rockies!

Welcome to the Rockies NJames!

Yes, the roster for the final round is still open.  I'll submit the roster this coming Monday around 6 pm CDT.  The games will take place beween next Wendesday evening and the following Monday afternoon.  If you're available to play then, please let me know, either by email at CPBovee@charter.net, by private message within this forum or smiply in this thread.

Thanks!
ChrisB

The times I selected for availability are pretty accurate. I didn't pick any times where I'm truly unavailable, although, the least preferred times might not find me at my best... at say, 3 AM!

Great to hear you're all set up!

Actually 3 am could be likely time, since that would be around 8 to 10 am in Europe  But, if you gave that time a low preference, it isn't very likely to be selected.

If we can field another roster like round 4, but substituting my  jaw-dropping 1362, :o we could come in under budget for the season. With the Atlantics facing off against Ring of Fire this round, we have a real shot at taking the #2 rank. Go Rockies!

You are in the starting line-up for the upcoming round, NJames!  Thanks for volunteering.

Unfortunately, we can not use your 1362 gameroom rating, since the league is using the peak human vs human whole history ratings (see: http://home.scarlet.be/~woh/whr/whrh.htm), but your 1460 rating there may work out just as well.

Good luck in your upcoming game!

I might remember seeing that somewhere... Since it's a peak rating, it seems you would certainly like to have rising players.

Most games have the ratings of the opponents fairly close, does the scheduler arrange that as best it can?

The tournament director will pair our #1 with Europa's #1, our #2 with their #2, and our #3 with their #3.  Seldom does this result in a mismatch (over 400 point difference), and often the games are very close and intense.

I'm convinced. I would like to join the Rockies. :D

I am in Cali, after all. At least until March.

If we have another season this year, I should be available for most of that time to participate.

Hi Team!

It looks like a new compressed season may start as early as next week! I sent all past and current team members a private message seeking volunteers to play during the November 9-14 time period.  Hope we'll get a great turnout this coming season!

[Edit]  I should add that new members are very welcome! [/Edit]

And well done ginrunner and Hircon, too!  Four points has us tied with the Atlantics for the league lead, but with 620 less of our budget spent we have an effective lead of more than a full point over them.  Great start to the season!
