Title: Bot On Supercomputer/Cluster
Post by Kraizy_Dave on Apr 17th, 2012, 5:44pm
Has anyone ever developed a Bot that runs on a very powerful computer or cluster of processors? Such a Bot would not be eligible for the Arimaa Challenge however it might provide a new insight into the game.

Is an ineligible Bot that is stronger than the best human a possible stepping stone for an eligible Bot that is stronger than the best human? Or would humans spot patterns in the play of the stronger Bot and develop new strategies to defend the Challenge?

I have a version of briareus that can take advantage of several PCs linked together. It ran well on a real cluster with an Infiniband network (though I didn't try it on many computers simultaneously) but when I tried it on Amazon EC2 the latency between computers was higher and it didn't work so well. But I think Amazon may have improved that in the meantime so I should try it out again.

Of course it's not cheap to build / rent a cluster, but it might be fun to run a few games with hundreds of CPU cores just to see how it does.

But if you just want to see how Arimaa bots play when given more computing power, you can instead look at the postal games that bots have played. I believe in those games the bots were thinking between 2 to 4 hours per move, which is a substantial increase in CPU power spent thinking on each move. Here are some of those games:
