There will be if you volunteer to give it.  ;)

We haven't done it before. But since the games are expected to be quite difficult for the defenders this year we might have a good turn out of spectators. Once I know the times the defenders would like to play, I will put up a shared document for commentators to sign up.

There is that sheet in WC commentary document already ...

Actually I remember Fritz commented some games last year.

Yes you are right. I found it; it was this game:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/gameroom/opengamewin.cgi?client=1&gameid=142332&role=v&side=w

But I recorded only the audio from it:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/videos/2010ac/g142332.mp3

We'll try to make a video this year and also broadcast it via the radio.

Thanks for getting this started Hippo.

I have copied the spread sheet over to a new file so that it will have an appropriate name.

Players can enter the time slot they would like to play their games under the 'Scheduled slot' column. You don't have to enter the times for all the games right now, but it would be good if you could give about a 5 days lead time so that others can plan to attend.

I don't know the numbers of the slots off the top of my head.  Also I can't find a link to the scheduler from the game room.  I could just enter my preferred time in the spreadsheet as local time, but that would be suboptimal for letting other viewers know when to be there.  :)

Thanks for the link, Omar.  I have put myself down for slot 66.  That is April 9, correct?  That same time slot should also work for me on April 16 and April 23.  If either of the other defenders would like an overlapping time, I have quite a bit of flexibility to change.

Actually the slot (in sheet) is relative to time Zero. I expect it to be the same time in the week as was in WC games ... what is Wed 17:00 in spreadsheet time :).

Yes, it would be on April 9th.

Yes, the time slots are the same as that used in the WC games. I've asked the defenders to use numbers greater than 119 to specify the slots that are not covered in the WC slot range.

I see only Patrick has signed up to commentate so far.

It would be great if someone can commentate on the 99of9 and rabbits challenge match games. Any takers?

I'll try to wake up early on Saturday to co-commentate for the 99of9 game.  It's not a guarantee at this point because I'm way behind on sleep after lots of overtime at the office, but there's a good chance I'll be awake by the time the game starts.

I would have opportunities to comment during whole Saturday so I could try to help.
Oops, not at all ...

I'll take Marwin vs. rabbits on Sunday, but I would be grateful to anyone willing to join me.

I think it would be good if someone joins arimaabuff, he is a good commentator but I think he will struggle to keep a continuous  commentary for 3 hours.

Title: Re: Arimaa challenge commentary:
Post by omar on Apr 7th, 2011, 10:02pm
Wow, thanks everyone. Looks like we will have commentary for all three games.

Yes, it would be good to have co-commentators for all the games, because the games can get long and hard to keep talking alone.

I'll also try to help out the commentators if needed, but don't hesitate to sign up.

It's looking less and less likely like I'll make it for the start of the game.  I'll be at the office really late tonight and might not make it home until midnight.  And the 99of9-Marwin game starts tomorrow at 6:30am local time  :(  Ordinarily I might be able to wake up after 6 hours sleep, but after several consecutive nights of poor sleep I'll probably need to catch up a bit on the weekend.

Hey everyone!

I saw that no one had volunteered yet, so I signed myself up to commentate on the rabbits vs Marwin game on Saturday. I have always wanted to try commentating and I hope that it is okay with all you guys. ^^  Patrick has signed up to be the co-commentator, so I won't be speaking alone. I look forward to it!

I apologize if this has already been answered elsewhere, but is there a way to watch past games along with the audio commentary that was done for them? Many thanks to all who have created this resource.

Actually, you are one of my favorite Arimaa comentators, Arimabuff, because you seem to have a type of laissez-faire, laid-back attitude to commentating.  When you take some time off of the mike, I know that you are contemplating the position, as am I, so that when you return, your opinion seems all the more insightful.

Actually, all of the commentary to these Arimaa games is quite impressive.  All of the commentators seem to have their strengths.  Fritzlein, Chess-n-Go, Adanac have amazing quick vision of the game; MegaJester, Omar are great stewards (keeping the show on track), etc.

If I was to add some advice for Nevermind, I'd say don't be afraid of dead-air.  It just means that you are thinking.  Also, every once in a while, maybe explain what the Arimaa term that you are using means.  Frame, Hostage, Basket, etc, because there might be some new players watching.  Plus, certainly the archived games will be viewed by newbies, also.

I second the suggestion to make an occasional comment offering some explanation for us newer players.

I have to take Aamir to school early tomorrow for a field trip. So I will have to leave for about an hour shortly after the start of the game tomorrow. It would be good if there was another commentator to help out Arimaabuff.

That'd be nice as commentating on two games in a row can be exhausting. :)

Ahhh!  Sorry to do this, but I want to change my game time.  About a day from now would work well for me.  That is slot 22 on the scheduler.

Sorry for the inconvenience...

Title: Re: Arimaa challenge commentary:

Okay, I will try to be more flexible for the possibility of still having commentary ( which I really do appreciate!)

Now it looks like I could play almost anytime friday afternoon.. I think any time slot from 39 to 46 could work for me if any one wants to suggest one.... Sorry about deciding about this so late.

Well, he wasn't initially the main commentator but it just so happens that one of my mic/speaker subroutines broke down for some reason, each time it tried to get back to teamspeak, not only wasn't I able to speak but I couldn't hear anything. I tried everything short of restarting the system, and it didn't work. I did not dare restarting the system as I was downloading a huge torrent file for more than a day and I was afraid that it would corrupt the file and I'd be forced to start over if I did. Anyway It was really too bad as I was starting to really enjoy these sessions, hopefully there'll be other occasions coming up.
